UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. COGGER, OF MORRIS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SHERWOOD SCHOOL FURNITURE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN FOLDING CHAIRS.
pecification forming part of Letters Patent N0- 181,l43, dated August 15, 1876; application filed June 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. B. Ooeenn, of Morris, in the county of Grundy, and. in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a folding chair, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, I will now proceed to describe my invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the chair in condition for sitting in. Fig. 2
represents a section taken through the center,
of the opened chair. Fig. 3 represents a side view of the chair folded up; and Fig. 4 represents a broken section, showing the mode of connecting the arms to the back bars.
The chair is made somewhat similar to the common camp-chair, and is composed of four (4) slightly-curved legs, A A A A, crossing each other, and pivoted at K, near the center of the bars, and connected together by rounds or braces g b b d. The back of the chair is composed of two slightly-curved bars, 0 0, connected at the top by a slat, a, and a little below the center by a brace or round, 9. D represents the canvas, carpet, cloth, leather,
or other flexible seat, and D the flexible filling in between the back bars 0 O and a g. The back bars 0 O are extended so that their lower ends rest on the barsA A of the seatframe when the chair is opened, and they are connected to said bars by pivoted metal straps m.
E E represent the arms to the chair. These are pivoted, at their lower ends, to the upper ends of the bars A, and are each provided with a slot,f, on the inner face, into which stationary headed bolts or screws y, on the exterior of the back bars 0 0, take.
To fold the chair, press the round or brace g and back together in the usual manner.
When the chair is opened, the ends of the back bars 0 rest on the legs A, and form a rigid support for the chair.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the crossed and pivoted legs A A A A, the extended back bars 0 O, pivoted straps mm, and arms E E, having slots f f, pivoted to the round 9, and connected to the bars 0 by the headed bolts or screws 3 all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of May, 1876.
WILLIAM B. OOGGER.
