strong and durable, andcapable of display on all sides. -f
I-Ieretofore, highway signs have been made large, bulky and cumbersome. Their construction has been mainly of wood andar# ranged to overcome wind stresses which are considerable on these signs in view of the large area with which the wind may come A into contact. Y
Furthermore, it has been ka general rule to limit the sign to a display on one side only. A one-side display sign is not as economical, because cost and maintenance is practically twice that of a sign having displays on both sides. To overcome these difficulties I provide a sign which is extremely pleasing inV appearance and tends to beautify the surrounding rather than detract from it asin most cases of the prior art. The construction is simple, inexpensive, very durable andpermits of a double display. Y
Figure l is a perspective view of a highway sign embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion thereof; FiO. 3 is a view illustratingthe opposite` side bf the display board to lindicate that I contemplate providing a display onV both sides of the board.
I do not intend to limit my design for use to highway advertising solely, inasmuch as it is possible to use the same construction Jfor signs adapted to other purposes.
The sign comprises a central supporting rectangular frame 8, preferably made of tubular `metal and bent rectangular to accommodate a signboard 4 within its plane. Frame member 3 is preferably curved at its corners to give a neat appearance and greaterstrength. By using tubular metal, it is comparatively easy to obtain the shape shown in Aboth sides 14: and l5 `for displays.
POst 2` adapted to be anchored at its lower 1154 the drawings. Tubular metal is substantialneaterappearance; VThe ends of the tubular `metal maybe flattened, as'indicated at 5, so
as to llie against the side edges of post 2. Any
[suitableffastening' means'may be used, such `as,'for1instance, the vbolts 6. Bolts/6 may eX.-
tend through the supporting post 2 -so as to connectib'oth ends'f of member 3 thereto.
It will be observed that signboard' is ar- *rangedV to be suspended within theplane of frame memberl. lAny suitable suspending means 'may be employed, but-I have illus- "lyfstronger than flat metal and provides a trated fastening means comprising a plural- Y A. ity of links Silo'cated at desirable distances '1" apart. 5
A further advantage of the frame member 3 resides inthe fact that suitable .designs orv scr'ollwork y may be connected to the upper` part of the sign soas to balance the designas Va Whole andv render ,the device, very pleasing in appearance.l It will be observedthat the ,linls' pass through. openin s 9 alongthe'u'p- 'per edge of signboard 4.1.' e upper loops of "links 8 pass throughv eyes `10 4of bolts 1l. 'These bolts 11 connectthis scrollwork 12 and therefore servethef dual I'unctionv of connect-V find `the signboardfto frame' 3 as well as the Obviously vfrom the above "description, the
lsign, lwhich I l.have .provided is extremely simple, inexpensivelto manufacture and in- 'Iso volves practically little expense to maintain. As illustrated in Fig. 3, I contemplate using The sign mayvbeplacedV adjacent the road in a positionv to permit travelers coming in opposite directions toview the opposite sides and A single'supportingpost 2jis very desirable .inV order that vthe soil adjacent tothe sign may be worked `or tilled, thereby occupying less not essential, reinforcing V.bars- 17 and `18 ymay be provided to reinforce the curves 19,7oi-the lower end of frame member 3. .IrconsiderI it withinthe scope of the `invention similarly to l`11070 l y reinforce any portion of the frame member 3, if it is found so desired. V
I do not intend to limit my invention to any details of construction inasmuch as it is possible or one skilled in the art to make modilications of the structure Aherein shown without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined in the appending claims.
I claim:
` .1. A highway advertising sign comprsing, in 4combination With a display board, a frame member bent into shape from a substantially single piece of substantially tubiilar metal uninterrupted from end to end and defining the plane of andlspace in which saidl .dienley beard ie. ndnpied te be hens and linneine Supporting pest ni'enreeie Sides fen engngenieni therewith, and Siirpeifiinsineene attached to said frame substantially oppas-,ite

2.-' A iiieiiwny ndvieiiieina 'eign @emprising, in combination,` a continuous hollow metellin frame member leent substantially into rectangular form and haying the'lower side of said/frame open at substantially the'center thereof, the ends of said frame member'at said center being bent outwardly of said frame' and flattened at their ends7 supporting .menne 'effin-ebenen enedesed side ofsaid fname #iienieirieelly np'ieneite .in the einen, Slide a substantially rectangular panel'siispended freni iSani menne. and filling the grenier inentiori'of the space defined bysaid frame 'soA that the defines the outline of Seid panel?, ensi'enppnriing ineens eeninrieing a post fitting between and fastened to the outwardly entending flattened pprt'ions'of an frame.
highway advertising Sign comprising, n @meenemen a .display bard, eine member spaced about the display board and fqrrned from a single piece of tubular metal uninterrupted from end toend, neach-'end of said frame Amember being bent inwardly below and under the lowerY edge of the display board and then downwardly near the center thereQf to receive a supporting post therebetweeng the downwardly extending ends of said frame member being flattened to engage against the opposite sides of said supporting post and to 'receive fastening means 'whichpass therethrough and into said supporting post, and attaching means for said display board on said frame member opposite to said downwardly extending ends thereof.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
