This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes pins, or analogous devices, of that general character in which there is embodied a movable member b cooperable with either of two members between which it isdisposed to clamp or hold an article placed therebetween.

The present invention resides in a novel arrangement of parts and the means of mounting the movable member. By this means there is provided a positive grip upon the article to be held, ease of manipulation, ready assemblage of the parts and insurance of a non-slipping grip on any article placed between the gripping members. The peculiar form of spring not only securely holds the article firmly in position but the extension thereof provides ready means of manipulation.

Other objects and advantages of the invention -will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention in its simplified form, is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the improved device.

This member is bifurcated as shown. The inner face of one of the bifurcations is provided with one or more transverse recesses 2 upon its inner face as seen clearly in Figure 1, the inner surface of the face of this member adjacent the recesses being rounded as shown at 3. The space between the bifurcations provides a space 4 in which is mounted to move a member 5, which. is pivotally mounted between its ends as seen at 6 upon a cross member 7 of a spring member 8, the other end 9 of this member being extended Like numerals of reference indicate like lbsl. at right angles to thelength of the member 1 and loosely engaged within a groove 13 made in the edge of the member 1 as seen in the several views.

Intermediate its ends the member 8 is '55 formed with a bend 10 which liesv alongside the member 1, and this member is then bent at substantially right angles to the member 10 as seen at 11 parallel with. the face of the member 1 and forms a rest for the finger of .0 the operator to enable him to actuate the movable member 5 as seen best in Figure 3.

The tendency of the member 8 is to force the face of the member toward the corrugated face of the adjacent member as seen in Figures 1, 2 and 3.

In use the article to be held by the device is placed between the opposed faces of the members which are corrugated as seen in the several views, the corrugations serving to prevent displacement of any article that may be placed between the jaws, regardless of the/character of such article, the movable member yielding to permit of the application of the device in accordance with the thickness of such article.

Pressure on the member 11 forces the member 5 away from the recessed face of the member 1 and when pressure is released from the member 5 the spring immediately forces the member 5 against the article between the jaws with the result that the article is securely held against accidental displacement.

Figure 3 shows a cloth 12 clamped between the opposed faces of the corrugated members.

It is securely held and the wind will have no effect in moving the parts to permit of the release of the cloth.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or sacrificing any of its advantages.

What is claimed as new is r 1. A device of the character described, comprising amember having a bifurcation,

a clamping member disposed within the bifurcation, and a spring member having one end engaged in the clamping member and the other-end removably engaged in a recess in the face of the other-member, said clamping member. being su ported solely upon the spring member an independently of the bifurcated member.

2. A device in accordance with claim 1 in which the said s ring member embraces the bifurcated mem ber and is frictionally held in osition.

3. A evice in accordance with claim 1 in which the spring member encircles one edge of the first-named member. 7 4. In a device of the character described,

a bifurcated member, an intermediate member disconnected from the bifurcated member and located between the branches thereof, and a spring member havin one end mounted about a portion of one o the mem bers and the other end mounted in the other member, the spring member being the sole support of the intermediate member.

5. A device in accordance with claim 4 in which the said members are corrugated adj acent the grasping faces thereof.

6. In a device of the character described, a member bifurcated for a portion only of its length, a gripping member disposed between the bifurcations, and a spring engaged at one end in the bifurcated member and at the other end mounted in the other member intermediate its ends said spring being the 30 sole support of said intermediate member.
