Description
W. ROEMER.
TRAVE'LING-BAGS, sATcHELs, am. No. 185,870. Patented Jan.z,1s77.
lwmr:
UNITED STATES PATENT EEroE,
WILLIAM ROEMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELlNG-BAGS, SATCHELS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,870, dated January 2. 1877 application tiled March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Traveling-Bags, Satcliels, &c., of which the following is a specicatiou:
This invention relates to an improved mode of attaching double handles to traveling-bags and similar articles; and consists in the oombination of four outwardly-bent staples, that are attached to and project above the jaws of the bag, with the two handles of the bag.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side view, Fig. 2 an end view, and Fig. 3 a perspective view, ot' my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The letter A in the drawing represents one jaw or side, and the letter B the other jaw or side, ot' the frame of' the traveling-bag, valise, satchel, or similar article. The jaw A is made to fold into and somewhat below the jaw B, as indicated in Fig. 3. U is the handle attached to the jaw A, and D the handle attached to the jaw B. The jaw A carries two staples, E E, which are composed ot' flattened perforated uprights and an upper connecting-bar, a, the axis of the connecting-bar a being at right angles to that of the perforations in the uprights, the pert'orations serving to receive rivets, whereby the staple is secured against the side of the jaw on the bag. The uprights of the staples E project above the upper t'ace of thejaw A and are bent outward, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the horizontal bar a is carried to the side of and above the edge of the jaw.
By this arrangement the handle C can be directly applied to the bars of the staples E, and will not be in the wayof the handle D. The handle D is attached to the jaw B by means of similar staples F F, as shown.
When the bag is carried by the two handles they will tend to hold the jaws closed, and will, owing to the position ot' the staples, not strain the bag.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the jaws A and B of a traveling-bag, and the handles C D, with sta.
ples E E F F, said staples projecting above the upper faces of said jaws, and being bent outward, substantially as herein shown, and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM ROEMER. Witnesses:
ERNEST C. WEBB, A. MORAGA.
