' IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,095, dated January 9, 1877; application filed December 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES TURLEY ALLEN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Adjustable and Folding Scafiolds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of this invention in theupright position. Fig. 2 is a partial transverse section. Fig. 3 is a bottom view, showing the scaffold folded up.
This invention has relation to improvements in scafioldings for plasterers, calciminers, and others; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the folding supports or end ladders and their extensions, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the platform of the scaffolding. B B represent the end supports or ladders, and 0 indicates the pivoted braces, whereby the end supports are connected to the platform by their lower portions, their upper ends being hinged, as shown at a a, to fold inward, the one over the other, when the braces are disconnected, the latter being then carried to opposite ends of the platform, and hooked intoend staples b b. Each end support consists of a main ladder, D, and an extension, E, connected thereto by slide-clamps c and fastenin g-pins d, the latter being passed through and justing perforations e, which are arranged to register, as indicated in the drawings.
Instead of an extension ladder or frame, E, independent extension-bars may be connected by clamps to the side rails of the main supports D.
At their upper ends the ladders D are provided with end bars F, which are hinged obliquely to the under side of the platform at one end, and at the other to an oblique or wedge-shaped cleat, G, whichis secured to the under side of the platform. The object of this construction is to turn the end supports a little to one side, when they are folded up toward each other, so that the side bars will pass each other, and pack closely to the platform A; and to facilitate this result, the cross-bars or rounds h of the end support B, which is folded inside of the other, are located near the inner edges of the side rails, while in the opposite end support, B, which folds down upon the other, they are located near the outer edges of said side rails.
In this manner it is designed to provide a portable scalibld, which can be easily folded and conveniently carried.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A portable scaffold, consisting of the platform A, pivoted braces (J, and obliquely-folding end supports or ladders B B, substantially as specified.
