A TTORNEYS Patented Sept. 6, 1932 UNITED "STATES PAT NT- o 1 ".1=1c1:-:
WALTER M. HANSON, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICANSIEAT- ING COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY surroarmo s'ranmmn ronj nnsx; Tors Application filed August 2, 1930. serial no; 472,568.
The present invention relates to tables, desk tops for schools, and the like; and its object is to provide an improved rigid support for such structures and improved means 5 for mounting ink wells and the like in connection therewith. I a
This and any other and more specific objects including structural details and economies of production are attained by, and the 1 invention finds preferable embodiment in, the desk structure particularly described'in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which 15 Figure 1 is an elevational end view of a desk structure, such as are installed in schools and the like; v j
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a portion thereof, the tabletop being partially broken so away;
Figure 3 is an elevational front view of a portion of said structure and a vertical sectional view of a portion of its support taken on line 83 ofFigure 1;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1 and showin an inkwell in the background; and
30 inkwell not being shown in section.
In this drawing a table or desk structure is illustrated having a table portion 1 and a supporting standard portion. This standard portion comprises a vertical post 3 provided with suitable legs 4 and a box designated generally 5 having a bottom wall 6, upwardly-diverging side walls 7, and front and rear end walls 9, 10, all these walls being rigidly joined together as by forming the bottom and the side walls of a single piece,
These side walls have outwardly horizontally extending flanges 13 supporting and secured to the table portion 1 as by screws 14 passing through holes 15 in these flanges. The said flanges have depressed portions 16 in-which is seated .a horizontal plate 17,- joined thereto as by welding, this plate having an opening 18 in which the upper end of the post extends fittingly, being desirably joined thereto as by welding. These flanges 13 have, as shown, other depressed portions 19 in which is seated another horizontal plate 20, similarly joined thereto, this plate hav ing an opening 21 in which extends upwardly the neck 22 of an inkwell 23 seated in the box and desirably having its sides 24 in contacting relation with the side walls 7 of the box.
These plates17, have, as shown, holes 15 through which fasteningscrews 14 for the table portion extend. The structure as shown also has a rear wall 25 secured to the box as by screws passing through holes 26in the rear wall 10 of the box; and also has a shelf 27 held in place as by screws 28 passing through holes in'the bottom wall 6 of thebox.
It will be seen that a peculiarly rigid support for the table portionis. thus provided,
the said bottomwall, end walls, horizontal plates and'the post being rigidly connected, and the diverging relation of the side walls affording a bracing connection'with the table portion; and that a stable support for the ink well is provided. V
It'will also be seen that the parts of this structure may be readily assembled and disassembledforstorage and shipment.
Furthermore: a structure sufliciently rigid for most purposes is: provided if one of the side walls 7 be omitted.
The invention being intended'to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to orby details of construction of the particular em bodiment thereof illustratedby the drawing or hereinbefore described.
I claim: J
