This invention relates to detachable springs for scissors, or any similar implement, and has for its object the provision of springs which may be operated by hand in closing the pivoted members of the scissors, and by the resiliency of the spring the scissors may be opened. In manicuring implementsparticularly the construction and arrangement herein disclosed, renders their operation by hand especially easy and convenient.
While it is not intended to limit this invention to the special formation and size herein set forth, the accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred form of the invention.
16 Fig. 1 is a side view of a pair of manicure nippers with this invention applied thereto and representing the open position. Fig. 2 is a. like side view showing the closed positions. Fig. 3 represents a cross section on the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows the spring detached. Fig. 5 shows a pair of manicuring scissors with this invention attached thereto in the open position. Fig. 6 shows a like view with the parts in Fig. 5 closed.
The illustrations are slightly larger than the actual implements for clearness of illustration.
Throughout the drawing and description the same number is used to refer to the same part.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing the blades of the nippers 1 and 2 are pivoted in the usual manner by the pivot. 3. Each blade portion of the nippers has a shank or extended portion 4, as shown in Fig. 1 and in cross section in Fig. 3. c
The spring has two portions 5 and 6 with the ends attached by a rivet 7 as shown. On the end is placed a slide loop 9, and two 4.0 raised stops 8 are formed integrally with the springs and spaced from the rivet. The function of the stops 8 is to hold the slide loop in position as explained later herein.
Each spring portion has at its free end a 4.5 socket or flanged recess construction 10, and
the side walls or flanges 11 are inwardly inclined as in Fig. 3. The shanks 4 are of corresponding cross section and frictionally engage the sockets 10.
0 In Fig. 2 it will be noted that the spring portions have towards the attached end two intermediate parts 12 and 13 which bow sllghtly outwardly after the slide has been passed to the left. The bowed parts 12 and 13 serve to retain the slide at adistance from r the attached end of the springs and to hold the spr ngs and nipper blades closed;
In Flgs. 5 and6 the pivoted members 14 and 15 are connected by pivot screw 16. The spring portions 17 and 18 are the same as before, and have the same socket or flanged end 19. The attached ends of the spring portions has the rivet 2'0, and near it the integrallyraised lumps 21 located in the path of the slide loop 22, and for the same purpose as the stops 8 mentioned previously. In Figs. 5 and 6 will also be. noted the raised stops or lumps 23 and 24 situated at a distance from the riveted ends. In operation the slide loop may be moved to the left closing the springs and passing over the lumps 23 and 24. After the slide has passed, the reaction of the springs shghtly'raises the lumps and retains the slide preventing the accidental opening of the blades of the scissors. The lumps 23 and 24 may be omitted if so desired, and it is not intended to limit this invention to the formation of such raised lumpsp 1 The operation in either fo'rmconsists in pressing the springs towards each other by hand to cut with the scissors, and releasing the springs to permit the scissors to open. If so desired there maybe a number of manicuring implements allied to nippers or scissors, and the same spring members may be used with each implement provided with shanks 4 'as described. To use the nippers or scissors the slide loop is moved to the right and passed over the stops 8 as illustrated in Fig. 1. The slide loop is now located next to the rivet, and a slight separation of the springs raises the stops and prevents the displacement of the slide to the left. Thus, when the user wishes to operate the scissors or nippers, the slide should be so passed over the stops 8 in order that the closing of the nippers during the operation and the opening of the blades may not be interfered with by an accidental slipping of the slide. Fig. 4 of the drawing is introduced to show the E1 positions taken up by the spring portions when detached. They are usually under a .slight tension, but no limitation of the invention is intended thereby. It is not an essential feature to provide means for retaining the blades either in open. or in closed positions, as the slide loopmay readily be fashioned and held frictionally upon the spring members.
Having now described this inventionand its use, I claim:
LA spring for scissors or the like, comprising two portions having their ends attached, a slide loop on said end for drawing the spring portions together, a stop for the slide, I means formed integrally, with said spring portions whereby said slide loop may be held on the spring at a distancefrom the attached end and the spring portions retained in their closed positions, and each of said portions having a socket whereby the spring may be attached to a pair of scissors.
2. A spring for scissors or the like, comprising two portions having their ends attached, a slide loop on said endfor drawing said portions together to closethe scissors, a stop for said slide loop near said attached end, each-of said portions having a socket whereby the spring may be attached to a pair of scissors, and a scissors having pivotal members each provided with a shank constructed to fit said sockets of the spring.
3. A spring for scissors or the like, com? prising two portions having their ends attached, a slide'loop on the said end fordrawing said portions together to close the scissors, a stop for the said slide near said attached end, each of, said spring portions having a socket whereby the spring may be attached to a pair of scissors in detachable relation, means formed integrally with the spring portions whereby said slide loop may be held at a distance from the attached end and the said spring portions retained closed, and
scissors having pivoted members each provided with a shank constructed to fit said sockets of the spring portions. In, testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
