said means being automatically operable by the sliding movement of the said bolt.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock of this nature which does not require the use of a key to actua-te the auxiliary locking or antijimmy means into locking position, but requires the use of a key or knob for unlocking same from its keeper.
Another object is to produce a device of the character described in which the maximum sim- 15 plicity of construction and operation is secured.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and co-relation of parts herein fully 2 described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and rthen finally pointed out and specically dened and indicated in the 25 appended claims.
The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present invention concept suggests a practical embodiment thereoi, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one 35 of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional View through a door showing my improved lock as applied thereto and in locked position.
Figure 2 is a face view oi the lock looking in the direction of the arrows 2--2 Figure 1 with the rear cover plate removed and showing the keeper partly in section.V

Referring now to the drawings in detail 10 indicates a door and 11 the door frame, the door being provided with a cylinder lock 12 operable by means of a key 13 from the outside of the door. The said cylinder lock is provided with a bar 14 which extends through a slot 15 in a disc 16 provided with an extension or hub 17 (see Fig. 1) which loosely passes through a hole in the cover plate 1S and has secured thereto a member 19 for retracting the bolt 20 which forms 6"' a part of my improved anti-jimmy lock 21.
The said lock comprises a casing in which there is slidably mounted the bolt 20 which is guided between upper and lower guide plates 26 and 27 respectively and in an opening 28 in the casing 25. When the bolt is in unlocked or retracted position it may be maintained in said position by means of a detent mechanism comprising a pin or stud 29 slidable in the casing and adapted to enter a hole or opening 30 in the bolt 20.
To operate the lock into locking position, the detent pin is withdrawn into the Figure 1 position and a spring 3l which is anchored at 32 and coiled about a stud 33 pushes the bolt into a keep- 80- er 84. During the said forward movement of the boit and at a pre-determined portion thereof, a pair of locking pins 35 slidable in the bolt head S6 are forced out into the Figure 2 position in the following manner. 85
During the first portion of the forward movement of the bolt, nothing will happen to the pins S5, as they are locked against movement by means of a block 36a which rests upon the flat upper surface 37a of a cam plate 37 (see Fig. 4), the said block being secured to a siide 38 slidably mounted on the bolt 20, which slide is provided at its forward edge with a toothed rack portion 39 in mesh with a pair of pinions 40 carried by pins 41, each provided with an offset or eccentrically located reduced portion 42 in engagement with a slot 43 in each of the pins 35. However, after the block 36o; leaves the surface 37a of the cam plate 37, a spring 45 coiled about a pin 46 and exerting a tension between the pin bearing 47 and the block 36a' causes a downward sliding movement of the slide 38 and rack 39 causing the pinions 40 to rotate and bring the pins 35 from the Figure 4 to the Figure 2 position, the offset or eccentric portions 42 in cooperation with the slots 43 causing the expansion of the pins 35.
For unlocking, the lock may be operated either by means of the key 13 or by means of a knob 50 rotatably mounted in the casing 25 and procol vided with a bolt retracting member 51 which is similar to the bolt retracting member 19.
To operate the bolt for retraction from the inside, the knob may be turned either to the right or left and the member 51 which is in engagement with a pair of legs or extensions 52, will when so turned draw the bolt inwardly out of the keeper 34. During the said inward movement, the block 36a which is in engagement with the cam surface 53 will be forced upwardly against the tension of the spring 45 carrying the rack 39 therewith and rotating the gears 40 and pins 41 to retract the pins 35 to permit the bolt to be withdrawn from the keeper 34. By the use of the key 13 from the outside, the same result is obtained as the retracting member 19 is in similar engagement with the bolt legs 52 as is the retracting member 51.
It is to be understood that when the door is open and the bolt is unlocked, the door may be locked by merely slamming same as the cam projection 55 on the keeper will actuate the bolt head against the tension of the spring 31 for retraction and when the door is closed, the said spring will force the bolt forwardly into the keeper and extend the pins 35 through the rack, gear and pin connections.
It will be noted that the keeper 34 cannot be removed when the bolt is in locked or extended position, as the keeper securing screws 56 cannot be gotten at when the door is locked, also no jimmying instrument can be inserted between the lock and keeper to force the lock members apart as the bottom of the keeper is j closed by a wall 57 thus entirely enclosing the bolt head in a metallic casing.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a thoroughly anti-jimmy lock that automatically locks itself when the bolt is in unl latched position and one in which the bolt may be operated for unlocking or retraction by means of a key from the outside or by a knob from the inside.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, slotted anti-jimmy pin carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack transversely movable of the bolt, and means operable by the said toothed rack extending into and in operative engagement with the pin slot to extend and retract the said pin.
2. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, a pair of slotted anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, and means operable by the said toothed rack extending into and in operative engagement with the said pin slots to extend and retract the said pins.
3. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, an anti-jimmy pin carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack transversely movable of the bolt, a cam in operative engagement with the rack for so moving the same, and means operable by the said toothed rack in operative engagement with the said pin to extend and retract same. f
4. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, a pair of anti-jimmy pins carried 'i by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a cam in operative engagement with the rack for so moving same, and means operable by the said toothed rack in operative engagement with the said pins to extend and retract same.
5. In a lock mechanism, a casing, a spring pressed bolt movable longitudinally thereof, a detent for locking the said bolt against movement, a spring pressed toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a normally retracted anti-jimmy pin carried by the said bolt, pin operating means in operative engagement with the rack and pin, and a cam in operative engagement with the rack so arranged as to permit of an initial forward movement of the bolt when the detent is disengaged from the bolt and prevent the transverse movement of the rack and consequent extension operation of the pin until the bolt nears the end of the said movement.
6. In a lock mechanism, a casing, a spring pressed bolt movable longitudinally thereof, a detent for locking the said bolt against movement, a spring pressed toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of normally retracted anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a pair of pinions in mesh with the rack, means extending from the said pinions in operative engagement with the said pins for the purpose specied, and a cam in operative engagement with the rack so arranged as to firstly permit a partial forward movement of the bolt and then upon the subsequent movement of the bolt, the operation of the rack, pinions and pins.
7. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, a pair of slotted anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of pins operable by the said toothed rack, oiTset portions on the said second mentioned pins in operative engagement with the said slotted pins to extend and 110 retract same, and means for retracting the said bolt.
8. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, a pair of anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of pins operable by the said toothed rack, means on the said second mentioned pins in operative engagement with the anti-jimmy pins to extend and retract same and key operated means for retracting the said bolt. 120

In a lock, a longitudinaly movable spring pressed bolt, a pair of anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of pins operable by the said toothed rack, means on the said second 125 mentioned pins in operative engagement with the anti-jimmy pins to extend and retract same, and knob operated means for retracting the said bolt.
10. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring 130 pressed bolt, a pair of anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of pins operable by the said toothed rack, offset portions on the said second mentioned pins in operative engagement with 135 the anti-jimmy pins to extend and retract same, key operated means for retracting the said bolt, and means for retracting the said bolt independently of the key operated means.
11. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring 11g pressed bolt, a pair of anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of pins operable by the said toothed rack, and offset portions on the second mentioned pins in operative engagement with the 1215 anti-jimmy pins to extend and retract same, the said bolt and anti-jimmy pins co-operating with a keeper having but a single opening through which the bolt is adapted to enter thereinto.
12. In a lock mechanism, a. casing, a spring 156 pressed bolt movable longitudinally thereof, a detent for looking the said bolt against movement, a spring pressed toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a normally retracted anti-jimmy pin carried by the said bolt, pin operating means in operative engagement with the rack and pin, a cam in operative engagement with the rack so arranged as to permit of an initial forward movement of the bolt when the detent is disengaged from the bolt and prevent the transverse movement of the rack and consequent extension operation of the pin until the bolt nears the end of the said movement, legs on the bolt, and a knob operated bolt retracting member in operative engagement with the said legs.
13. In a look mechanism, a casing, a spring pressed bolt movable longitudinally thereof, a detent for locking the said bolt against movement, a spring pressed toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a normally retracted antijimmy pin carried by the said bolt, pin operating means in operative engagement with the rack and pin, a cam in operative engagement with the rack so arranged as to permit of an initial forward movement of the bolt when the detent is disengaged from the bolt and prevent the transverse movement of the rack and consequent extension operation of the pin until the bolt nears the end of the said movement, legs on the bolt, a knob operated bolt retracting member in op erative engagement with the said legs, and a key operated bolt retracting member in operative engagement With the said legs and independently operable of the said knob operated member.
14. In a lock, a longitudinally movable spring pressed bolt, a pair of anti-jimmy pins carried by the said bolt, a toothed rack slidable transversely of the bolt, a pair of cross pins, a pinion at one end of each of the said cross pins in mesh with the rack, and an eceentrically positioned extension at the opposite end of the cross pins in operative engagement with the anti-jimmy pins.
