Description

T. BOYLSTON. Chin-Adjuster.
Patented Nov. 20, I877.
N PETERS FHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER.WASHINGTON. D c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS BOYLSTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IM PROVEMENT IN CHlN-ADJUSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,243, dated November 20,1877; application filed October 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS BoYLsToN, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Chin-Adjuster, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient means of preventing the dropping of the lower jaws of deceased persons.
The invention consists in an adjustable supporter, so constructed that when placed with its base resting upon the breast-bone, and its top underneath and supporting the chin of a deceased person, the distance between the said base and top may be shortened or lengthened at will, so as to always effect the raising of the lower jaw enough to close the mouth and keep the chin and face supported.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an edge View of the supporter applied to its use. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
A is the base of the supporter. B is the top or chin rest. This is provided with a vertical hollow stem or socket, b, threaded on the inside for the reception of a threaded shank, O, which constitutes the adjustable connection between the top B and base A of the supporter. The lower end of the shank O is swiveled to the base A through a hub, preferably formed on the base to give longer bearing to the swivel. Above the swivel the shank O is provided with a surrounding button, 0', for turning the screw in or out in the socket 1), thereby shortening or lengthening the distance between top and base.
By applying the supporter between the breast-bone and chin, as shown in Fig. 1, and turning the hand-nut or button 0, the right distance between top and base for closing the lower jaw and supporting the chin and face is easily attained.
The shank may be swiveled to the top and the socket attached to the base, or the shank may be formed in one piece with the base or top and not threaded, but sliding in the socket formed on the top or base, and held in position by a set-screw; but I prefer the construction shown in the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The chin-adjuster herein described, consisting of a chin-rest, a fixed base-piece, and a stem and socket, adjustable one upon the other, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The upper rest B, curved to fit the chin, and provided with the internally -threaded socket b, in combination with the swiveled and screw-threaded shank O and the base A, as and for the purpose set forth.
