Claims.
-hepresent invention relates to cartons or .intainers, particularly for tapering bottles and the like; and its object is to provide such a carton improved .in respects hereinafter appearing; 5 and particularly, to provide such a carton comprising a larger lower part and an upwardly tapering smaller part; and further, to provide such a carton having vertical opposite sides or walls provided withopenings therethrough whereby they may be readily grasped and carried, said sides being alsoadapted to be folded into lapping relation wherein said sides are secured together to form the closed top of the carton.
These and any other and more, specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the illustrative carton particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the 0 accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 tea view in perspective of a carton;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the upper portions thereof showing the parts in another position; v
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of said carton taken on line 33 of Figure 4;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the carton taken on line 4--4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a blank which may 3 be bent along dotted lines thereof to form the carton; and
Figure 6 is a view inperspective of said blank partially thus bent to form the carton.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated by these drawings, the carton 1 is made by bending a flat papersheet or blank f cardboard or the like along the dotted lines shown in Figures 5 and 6 which define the hereinafter described portions of the blank. This blank comprises a rectangular middle portion 3 forming the bottom 4 of the carton, a pair of rectangular portions 5 at the opposite sides of said middle portion and forming the sides 6 of the lower and larger part 7 vof the carton these portions 5 each having a pair 01? end flaps 8 folded inwardly at right-angles to portions 5 to form the ends 9 of said lower part an d have interlocking means, the tongues 10, engaging in slits 11 for holding said flaps in proper relation.
The blank also comprises a pair of flaps -12 extending outwardly from the pair 5 (i. e., upwardly in the formed carton) and tapered as shown to form the sides 13 of the tapering upper part 14of the carton, and the flaps 15 extending thus upwardly from one pair of naps 8 and tapered as shown to form'the ends 16 of said tapered upper part. The flap portions 12 have end portionsl'l, which may be extended upwardly as seen in Figure 1 and have openings 13 which register with eachother to receive the hand of a person carrying the carton; or these extending portions 1'? may be folded to lap each other as shown in Figures 2 and 4 thus forming a closed top 19 for the carton. In said second-mentioned position these portions 17 are secured together by interlocking means, as the inwardly extending tab 20 of one of said openings which is inserted into a suitable receiving slit 21 in the other portion 12.
In the illustrated construction the tapering flap portions 15 have extensions 22 adapted to be folded horizontally inwardly and have means, as the interlocking tongues 23 for connecting them; and one of the tapering flap portions 12 has end flaps 24 adapted to be folded inwardly. The por- 75.- tion 3 has end flaps 26 turned inwardly.
It will be seen that the lower parts of the bottles indicated at 25 in Figure 3 are held close together in the lower part '7 of the carton, their tapering upper ends being held in the cartons tapering 80.- upper part 14; and that the carton may be closed at its top as shown in Figures 2 and 4 for storage, etc., or may be readily carried about in the position of the parts seen in Figure l.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment the bottom of the carton and'having end flaps .5)
turned inwardly, a pair of rectangular portions at the opposite sides of .the middle portioniforming the sides of said lower part of the carton each having a pair of end flaps forming the'end's of said lower part and provided with interlocking means, tapering flaps extending from one pair of said end flaps forming the ends of said taper-, ing upper part' and provided with interlocking means, and comprising also a pair of portions tapering from said pair of rectangular portions forming the sides of said upper part and provided with interlocking means.
2. A carton rectangular in horizontal section comprising a lower. part and a part tapering up-v wardly therefrom, made by bending a flat sheet, 119
comprising a rectangular middle portion forming the bottom of the carton and having end flaps turned inwardly, a pair of rectangular portions at the opposite sides of the middle portion forming the sides of said lower part of the carton each having a pair of end flaps forming the ends of said lower part and provided with interlocking means, tapering flaps extending from one pair of said end flaps forming the ends of said tapering upper part and having extended portions bent toward each other and provided with interlocking means, and comprising also a pair of portions tapering from said pair of rectangular portions forming the sides of said upper part and provided with interlocking means.
3. A carton rectangular in horizontal section comprising a lower part and a part tapering upwardly therefrom, made by bending a fiat sheet comprising a rectangular middle portion forming the bottom of the carton, a pair of rectangular portions at the opposite sides of the middle portion forming the sides of said lower part of the carton each having a pair of end flaps forming the ends of said lower part and provided with interlocking means, tapering flaps extending from one pair of said end flaps forming the ends of said tapering upper part and provided with interlocking means, and comprising also a pair of portions tapering from said pair of rectangular portions forming the sides of said upper part and provided with interlocking means.
4. A carton rectangular in horizontal section comprising a lower part and a part tapering upwardly therefrom, made by bending a fiat sheet comprising a rectangular middle portion forming the bottom of the carton, a pair of rectangular portions at the opposite sides of the middle portion forming thesides of said lower part of the carton each having a pair of end flaps forming the ends of said lower part and provided with interlocking means, flaps extending from one pair of said end flaps forming the ends of said tapering upper part, and comprising also a pair of portions tapering from said pair of rectangular portions forming the sides of said upper part and having hand-receiving openings therethrough.
5. A carton rectangular in horizontal section comprising a lower part and a part tapering upwardly therefrom, made by bending a flat sheet comprising a rectangular middle portion forming the bottom of the carton, a pair of rectangular portions at the opposite sides of the middle portion forming the sides of said lower part of the carton each having a pair of end flaps forming the ends of said lower part and provided with interlocking means, flaps extending from one pair of said end flaps forming the ends of said tapering upper part, and comprising also a pair of portions tapering from said pair of rectangular portions forming the sides of said upper part and having hand-receiving openings therethrough in mutual
