Description

F. HUBBARD SEWING MACHINE ATTACHMENT -2 Shets-Sh'eet 1 Filed March 19, 1956 I and fi Attorneys W F. HUBBARD SEWING MACHINE ATTACHMENT Sept. 1, 1936.
2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 19, l936 EREEEEEEEEIFG Inventor ,4 jwamaaard b 2% j and g A ttomeyg Patented Sept. 1, 1936 lTED STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines for use particularly in the manufacture of knitted undergarments, such as mens union suits, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a machine of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which the tubular garment may be cut and the facing and the button stay sewed thereon all in one operation.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sewing machine of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and desirable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view principally in horizontal section through the bed.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary View in vertical longitudinal section through an outer end portion of the bed, showing the drive for the lower rollers and the lower knife.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a hollow metallic base I, said base constituting a casing in which a main drive shaft 2 is journalled. The base I is secured in any suitable manner on one end portion of a suitable support 3, such as a table. Mounted on the base I is an arm 4 in the free end portion of which needle bars 5 are mounted for vertical reciprocation. The needle bars 5 are operatively connected to the shaft 2 for actuation thereby in any suitable manner. The reference numeral 6 designates the needles in the lower ends of the bars 5. It may be well to here state that this machine comprises four needles 6.
Projecting horizontally from the base I beneath the arm 4 is a comparatively broad, fiat bed 1 of hollow construction. Journalled transversely in the outer end portion of the bed 1 is a shaft 8 having fixed thereon spaced feed rollers 9 and I 0. Also fixed on the shaft 8, between the rollers 9 and I0, is a roller II. On its 5 outer end, the comparatively short feed roller 9 is provided with ratchet teeth l2. Pivotally mounted, at an intermediate point, on the adjacent side wall of the bed 1 is a lever I3 the upper end of which is connected by a rod M to 10 an eccentric l5 on the shaft 2. The other end portion of the lever I3 has formed therein a slot [6 in which one end of a rod I! is pivotally and adjustably connected. The other end of the rod I! is provided with a suitable pawl l8 which is 15 operatively engaged with the ratchet teeth [2. Still referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, the reference numerals l9 designate the feed arms of the machine, the reference numeral 20 designates the right and left looper shafts and 2| des- 20 ignates the right and left feed lift arms, all of these elements being actuated by the main drive shaft 2.
Secured, as at 22, on the free end of the arm 4 is a metallic housing 23 which includes a re- 25 movable front plate 24. Slidably mounted in the lower portion of the housing 23 is a block 25 on the lower end of which a roller 26 is journalled,
a block 27 on the lower end of which a comparatively long roller 28 is journalled and a block 30 29 on the lower end of which a knife 30 is journalled. The roller 26 coacts with the lower roller 9, the roller 28 coacts with the lower roller l0, and the knife 30 coacts with the roller ll. Springs 3| are provided in the housing 23 above 35 the blocks 25, 21 and 29 for yieldingly urging the rollers 26 and 28 and the knife 30 downwardly. The tension of the springs 3| may be regulated as desired through the medium of adjusting screws 32 which are threadedly mounted in the 40 upper portion of the housing 23.
It is believed that the operation of the invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the foregoing, particularly by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains. The tubular garment is fed by the coacting rollers 9 and 26 and Ill and 28 toward the needles 6, said garment being cut or split longitudinally by the coacting knife 30 and roller II. By reason of the pawl and ratchet drive shown to advantage 0 in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, the rollers 9, l0 and II will be intermittently actuated, thus moving the work in a step by step fashion. This step by step movement of the work is synchronized with the vertically reciprocating needles 55 6. By adjusting the rod I! in the slot I6 of the lever l3 the stroke of said rod and consequently the length of each movement of the work may be regulated as desired. Suitable folders for the facing lining, the button stay lining and for turning the edges of the garment are to be provided on the bed I between the feed rollers and the needles.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sewing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the machine is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrange ment of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A cutting attachment for sewing machines comprising, a shaft journalled in the bed of the machine, spaced feed rollers fixed on said shaft, an intermediate roller fixed on said shaft between said feed rollers, means for intermittently actuating the shaft, 2. housing mounted on the machine above said rollers, blocks mounted for vertical sliding movement in said housing, rollers journalled on certain of the blocks and cooperable with the first namedrollers, a circular knife journalled on the other of said blocks and cooperable with the second named roller, springs for yieldingly urging the third named rollers and the. knife toward the first and intermediate rollsprings.
, ers, and means for regulating the tension of said 15
