This invention relates to finger-nail stencils and more particularly to a finger-gripping device which is self-retained on the finger and covers a portion of the nail, an object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which after a nail is covered with polish and allowed to dry can be firmly secured over a portion of the nail thoroughly covering and protecting the polish under the same and permitting the use of a polish remover at the ends of the nail to leave the so-called moon and outer edges of the nail free from polish.

The device includes a pair of pivotally-connected spring-pressed arms carrying finger-nail stencils at their ends which constitute fingergripping jaws, said stencils being of different sizes, one for use on the nails of the fingers and the other for use on the nail of the thumb.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangements of parts, all of which will be more fully hereinafter pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 4 is a. view in elevation at right angles to Fig. 3, showing how the spring-pressed arms are operated by the fingers of the user to separate the stencils and allow them to be positioned on opposite sides of the finger and clamp the same;

Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating a finger-nail I fully covered with polish;

Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the same nail after it has been protected by my improved stencil and the polish at the inner and outer ends of the nail removed.

My improved device includes a pair of arms or levers I, I which have inwardly turned perforated ears 2 intermediate their ends receiving a rivet which constitutes a pivot, and a spring 5 is located around the pivot and bears against the arms tending to move the arms together at one end. 6, 6 represent finger-gripping jaws which constitute stencils and are preferably integral with the ends of the arms I. above and over the finger-nail l as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawing. One of the stencils 6 is adapted for use on the fingers of the hand and the other is slightly larger and is adapted for use on the thumb.

In operation the finger-nail is completely covered with polish, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, and this polish is allowed to dry. The operator then positions the stencil 6 over the nail, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and permits the stencils which constitute jaws to grip opposite sides of the finger. The operator then uses a polish remover which may be in the form of a liquid and may be applied by any suitable means to rub off the polish at the exposed ends of the nail thus leaving the desired moon at one end of the nail and a portion at the extremity of the nail free from polish, as shown more clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawing.

The shapes of the stencil of course are capable 20 of modification but are such as to give to the polished nail the desired appearance, and in use the gripping jaws which constitute stencils so firmly grip the finger and bear upon the nail as to prevent the polish remover from getting under the stencil during its application.

While I have illustrated what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that various slight changes may be made with regard to the form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and. scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of pivotally connected springpressed arms, and jaws at the ends of the arms constituting finger-nail stencils.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of pivotally connected springpressed arms, and jaws at the ends of the arms constituting finger-nail stencils, one of said stencils being larger than the other and both of said stencils so proportioned and shaped as to cover the major portion of the polished fingernail to allow the inner and outer extremities of the finger-nail to be freed from polish by the application of a polish remover.

A device of the character described, comprising a pair of arms pivotally connected intermediate their ends, a pair of jaws at the extremities of the arms constituting finger-nail stencils, and a spring between said arms tending to force the jaws together whereby said jaws when positioned on opposite sides of the finger will grip the same and the device will be self-held
