gmc/Mou; Waler J Mahr/mm @la Hard JC Mhfm @n WMC - vPatented May 25, 1937 UNITED STATES ATOMIZER Walter .I. Mehl-man and Clifford J. Mehrman, Toledo, Ohio Application February 20, 1936, SerialNo. 64,942
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an atomizer.
It is aimed to provide an exceedingly simple and compact atomizer capable of manufacture at minimum cost and adapted for manufacture in 5 attenuated form whereby it is well adapted to be carried in the pocket or in a ladys handbag like a pen or pencil.
Such an atomizer is particularly useful in spraying perfume, medical oils as for nasal, throat and ear infections, oils on to flshermens flies or the like.
Various objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure l is a view in atomizer;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line i-fi of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the atomizer has a cylinder il! provided with an end wall il and with screw threads I2 at the opposite end detachably engaged by a tip or nozzle i3. Any suitable material to be sprayed or atomized is contained within the space or chamber of the barrel lil and to be atomized Aor leave the same through an outlet 35 tube Iii, surrounding an air tube l5, with less diameter than the bore of the tube Ill. The material and airl admixing in a chamber I6 at the outer end portion of the nozzle i3 and leaving through an orice Il. 1
Said air tubel is anchored in a 'nipple I8 extending from the wall Il of the cylinder and removably secured about the nipple i8 by means of a nut I3, is a packing cup 2D of leather .or the like and an expander 2i therefor. The wall II is extended outwardly as at 22, to co-act with the packing 2i to form a piston.
Said piston is located within the bore of a tubular plunger 23 and said packing 20 intimately engages the bore wall of such plunger. 50v One end of the plunger has an inwardly extending -iiange 2li to overlap the projecting portion 22 to prevent accidental detachment of the plunger. An expansive coil spring 25 located within the plunger 23 engages the piston at one end and a closure 26 for the plunger at the other elevation of the improved (ci. a99-ss) end. Such closure is screw threaded in the plunger as at 21 and it has check valve 28 mounted in a cage 29, a passageway 30 through the closure establishing communication with the atmosphere under the control of such valve 28.
Such plunger is adapted to be pressed inwardly toward the piston wall I I to eject air under pressure through the tube I5, chamber I6, where it admixes with the material to be atomize'd, passing to the tube It, and thence being atomized through the orifice l1. Such plunger is slidably accommodated between the cylinder I and the cylindrical or tubular sheath 3| fastened at an inwardly enlarged portion 32 to the cylinder. A vent passage 33 extends through the nozzle I3 from the exterior to the interior of the cylinder.
It is clear that the material in the cylinder I0 is atomized through rapid and repeated depressions of the plunger 23, causing air to pass through the tube I and the material to pass through the tube Iii, such air and materials admixing in chamber I6 and being ejected and atomlzed through the orifice I'i.
Especially since the device is adapted to be carried in the pocket or a pocketbook, a cap 34 is provided which is detachably screw threaded as -at 36 to the sheath 3 I. This cap contains a soft rubber or other gasket block 35 adapted for direct contact with the outer end ofthe nozzle I3 in order to close the orifice i1 against leakage. In addition, a clip 36' is provided on the cap to facilitate attachment to the pocket or the equivalent and this clip has an anchor portion 31 ex tending through the wall of the cap and to the interior thereof and held in place by a ring 38 suitably secured interiorly of and to the cap.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:-
An atomizer of the class described having a cylinder, an end wall on said cylinder, an outwardly extending flange on the cylinder adjacent to said Wall, a nozzle at the other end of the cylinder having an outlet orifice, an air tube communicating with the orifice and mounted by said wall, a tube communicating with the nozzle in communication with the orifice and adapted to convey material from the cylinder to be atomized, and a plunger surrounding and in telescopic relation with the cylinder operable to force air through the tube first mentioned, an inwardly extending flange on the plunger adapted to abut the rst mentioned ange to limit outward movement of the plunger, an expansive spring urging the plunger in a direction away from the' cylinder. a check valve in the end wall of the plunger, and the latter end wail having a passage opening at a side thereof establishing communication between the interior of the plunger and the atmosphere under control of theyalve, said nozzle having passage leading from the atmosphere tothe interior of the cylinder, and a sheath secured to the cylinder adjacent the nozzle and extending beyond the piston wall and in overlapping relation with the plunger, said sheath having an inward enlargement tor abutment by the ange of the plunger to limit inward movement of the plunger.
