L Z i r INVENTOR y ATTORNEY Patented June 8,1937l PATENT oFFicE GOLF CLUB Le Roy 0. Werner,` Wheeling, W. Va.V
Application June 28,
3 Claims.
This invention relates broadly to golf clubs, and more particularly to an implement carried as a part of a golf club for conveniently forming or molding a recess in the earth for the ready reception of the ordinary driving tee.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide in association with the terminal end of a golf club handle an implement of substantially the size and shape of the shank of the ordinary tee, which implement may be readily inserted in frozen turf or hard earth and withdrawn therefrom so as to mold a recess of predetermined depth in which the golf tee may be conformably received.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned by means of which the present objectionable and unsatisfactory method of driving the tee in hard earth with the head of the golf club or other instrument with resultant breakage of wood tees is eliminated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned in which the recess may be molded ina substantially true perpendicular plane and to a predetermined depth. Thus, ydriving tees may be uniformly positioned at all times with substantial elimination of inaccurate driving of the ball upon the part of the player due to imperfectly positioned tees.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for setting up a driving tee whereby the players hands need not come in contact with the earth and thereby become soiled.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an instrument for forming a recess in the earth for the reception of the driving tee, said recess being of such appropriate size and shape that the tee is not ordinarily damaged after driving the golf ball therefrom, but, on the other hand, may be easily removed by hand and reused if the same is not actually lifted out of the recess by the impact of the golf club lhead when the ball is driven.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent upon a full understanding of the invention as hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a golf club 50 equipped with my invention showing the end shield for the die in positionron the end of the handle; l
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View of the end of the handle of a golf club illustrating one form 55 of the device;
1935, serial No. 28,821
tioned in the earth and ready to have a balldem posited thereon preparatory to driving.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawing, the reference numeral 2 designates the handle end of the shaft of a golf club. Rigidly attached to the end of the shaft, as by means of the integrally formed, threaded shank 3, is a circular plate or disc 4, preferably formed of metal, having formed integrally therewith and protruding outwardly therefrom a tapering instrument 5, the latter element in use functioning as the forming die hereinbefore referred to. A removable cap-like shield 6, having its exterior surface knurled, as shown at I in Fig. 1, protects the die 5 when not in use, the same being attached by any suitable means, as, for instance, by threads borne by the periphery of the plate 4.
In use, when it is desired to form 'a recess for the reception of a driving tee 8, the shield 6 is removed; the shaft 2 inverted and placed in a perpendicular plane, following which the die 5 is forced intov the earth, as shown in Fig. 5, and withdrawn therefrom to form the recess to conformably receive the tapering shank of the tee 8.
In the modified form depicted in Fig. 3, the end of the club shaft is provided with a reduced end 9 over which a cap-like element Ill is appropriately fastened and from which the die projects.
In the second modification illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, a central axial bore I2 of predetermined depthis formed in the handle and the bore is lined with a bushing I3 having interior threads provided in'its outer end. In this form, the die 5a is suspended within the bore by means of the enlarged threaded portion I4 and has an integral knob I 5 formed on its outer end.
In use, the latter modification is rendered operative by withdrawing the die 5a from the bore I2 in Van obvious manner and replacing the threaded portion I4 in reversed position so that the die 5a protrudes outwardly from the end of the handle, as shown in dotted lines.
It is intended lthat the various elements of the invention be made of material light in weight,
CII
as, for instance, aluminum, so that the balance of the club will not be materially disturbed.
It will be noted that, since the die is capable of ready insertion regardless of the condition of the earth, the invention aords means whereby a player preparatory to driving may rst select a stance affording solid, comfortable footing Without rst being obliged to examine the earth Vfor a satisfactory penetrable location to position a tee.
What is claimed is- 1. In an implement for molding a recess for the reception of a golf tee comprising a plate provided with a shank adapted to be embedded within an end of a golf club shaft for attaching the plate to the latter, and a die protruding from the opposite face of said plate for forming the recess.
2. In an implement for molding a recess for the reception of a golf tee comprising a plate provided With a shank adapted to be embedded Within an end of a golf club shaft for attaching the plate to the latter, a die protruding from the opposite face of said plate for forming the recess, and a removable closure associated with said die and plate.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle of a golf club, of a plate attached to the terminal end of said handle, said plate having protruding therefrom a die for v forming a recess for the reception of the shank of a driving tee, and a cap-like shield for said die removably received by the periphery of said plate.
