This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adhesive applying devices and more particularly to devices for applying adhesive to the inner wall surface of a package or sleeve so that a bottom, top or like section may be secured` therein.
To this end, the invention consists in the novel f construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Y Fig. l-is a fragmentary View partially in section showing the details of construction of an adhesive applying device made in accordance with this invention.

Referring new to the drawings', and particularly Fig; 1A thereof, the device contemplated by the present invention comprises a hollow shaft or tube I which is preferably xedly mounted parallel to thesurface of a base or other supporting structure 2 by means of a standard 3. IV is connected bymeans of apipev or other suitable means 4 and valves 5 and 6 Vtov a container 1 which is adapted to be lled with a suitable adhesive substance such as glue, paste or the like. 'I'he valve is intended to function as a Vprimary shut ofi valve which may be manually operated at will through its handle 8, Whereas the valve 5 located between the valve 6 and the' hollow tube or shaft Iris operative in a manner set forth hereinafter toV intermittently control flow of the adhesive material from the container 'I inwardly of the hollowrshaft or tube I when the shut'oif valve 6 is open during periods of normal operation and use of the device. f
Forming an integral part of the hollow tube or shaft I at the opposite or right hand end thereof is a solid disk-like'portion 9 having a diameter approximately twice that of said hollow tube or shaft portion I and a series of outlets or ports I0 are formed inthe shaft I inwardly adjacent said disk-like portion 9 for the purpose of permitting flowcf the adhesive'material outwardly from the interior ofsaid hollow shaft or tube I.

In addition to reciprocating or actuating the head II with respect to or upon the hollow tube or shaft -I and its solid disk-like portion 9, the rocker arm 28 also functions to operate the control valve 5 through a crank 36 having a sliding connection with a bar `3'I suitably secured or mounted upon the adjacent face of the rocker arm 28 so that said valve 5 will be open to permit the free flow of adhesive fromV the container I to the hollow tube or shaft I during the advance stroke or movement of the head II tothe right` withV respect to Fig. 1 of the drawings and into the adjacent endof a package, container or like article 38 to which adhesive is to be applied and close the valve 5 to shut off the flow of adhesive to the hollow tube or shaft I during return or reverse movement of the head I I to the left with respect to Fig. 1 of the drawings as it is withldrawn from the adjacent end of the package or container 38.
The containers, packages or other articles to receive adhesive from the head I I are designated generally by reference numeral 38 and are successively positioned'in coaxially spaced relation with respect to the hollow tube kor shaft and said head I I to receive the latter as actuated intothe position shown in dot and dashlines during the advance or working stroke thereof. Assuming a container, package or the like 38 to be positioned in the relation shown in dot and dash lines of Fig. 1 of the drawings with respect to the head I I, the latter is actuated to the right in the manner previously described inwardly of the adjacent end of said container or package 38. The recess I 4 and associated communicating passages are substantially filled with adhesive material fed through the hollow tube or shaft I through the outlet openings or ports I0 therein and as said head II travels to the right with respect to said and deposited onto the adjacent inner wall surface of the container or package 38.
As return or withdrawal of the head commences, the valve 5 controlling the now of adhesive from the container 1 to the hollow tube or shaft I is closed thus creating a partial Vacuum .at the tube side of the Valve 5 and enabling the disk-like head 9 to exert a suction force or pull on the adhesive, remaining in the recess I 4 and its communicating passages tending to withdraw said adhesive from the neighborhood or area of the discharge ports and prevent further discharge or dripping of the adhesive from the head II when withdrawn from within the article 38.
It will be obvious that the adhesive distributing head II 'may beof any desired configuration or shape other than that shown and described herein. So too, while specific details of construction o'f the present invention have been described and illustrated; it is not intended lthat said invention reciprocating distributing head having a chamb er therein -and discharge ports communicating therewith, a relatively fixed'feeding tube extending through said head for supplying adhesive tok the chamber thereof, and an enlarged piston-like extremity on said tube slidably occupying said chamber, said piston-like extremity being operative in one stroke of each cycle oi reciprocation of said head to exert pressure on the adhesive in the chamber and discharge the same outwardly through said dischargey ports and in the other stroke to create suction in said chamber tending to withdraw adhesive from the neighborhood or area of' said discharge ports. n

An adhesive applying device comprising a reciprocating` distributing head having a chamber therein and discharge ports in the peripheral surface of said head communicating therewith, and a relativelyxed feeding tube for supplying adhesive to the chamber including an enlarged piston-like extremity slidably occupying said chamber and operative in one stroke of each cycle of reciprocationV of said head to exert pressure on the adhesive in the chamber Vand discharge the same outwardly through said discharge portsv and same outwardly through said discharge ports andV in the other stroke to create suction in the chamber tending to withdraw adhesive from the neighborhood or area of the discharge ports.
4. An adhesive applying device comprising a.
reciprocable distributing'head having a chamber therein and discharge ports communicating therewith, a relatively fixed feeding tube for supplying adhesive to said chamber, means for reciprocating the head, and piston-like means forming a part of said feeding tube slidably occupying the chamber in said head and operative k in one stroke of each cycle of reciprocation of the head to exert pressure on" the adhesive in said chamber and discharge the same outwardly through said discharge ports and in the other stroke to create suction in the chamber tending to withdraw adhesive from the neighborhood or area of the discharge ports.

An adhesive` applying device comprising a reciprocating distributing head havingpa chamber therein and discharge ports communicating therewith, a relatively fixed feeding tube for supplying adhesive to the chamber including an enlarged piston-like extremity slidably occupying said chamber and operative in one stroke of each cycle of reciprocation of said head to exert pressure on the adhesive in the chamber and discharge the same outwardly through said discharge ports and in the other stroke to create suction in said chamber tending to withdraw adhesive from the neighborhood or area of said discharge ports, a valve controlling the feed of adhesive through said tube, and means operative in timed relation with reciprocation of the head to open said valve during the first mentioned stroke of each cycle of said head and close the valve during the other stroke thereof.

An adhesive applying device comprising a reciprocable distributing head having a chamber therein and discharge ports communicating therewith, a relatively fixed feeding tube for sup- Y plying adhesive to said chamber, means for reciprocating the head, relatively fixed piston-like means slidably occupying the chamber in said head and operative in one stroke of each cycle of reciprocation of the head to exert pressure on the adhesive in said chamber and discharge the same outwardly through said discharge ports and in the other stroke to create suction in the chamber tending to Withdraw adhesive from the neighboryfhood or area of the discharge ports, a valve controlling the feed of adhesive to said chamber, and means actuated by the first mentioned means for opening said valve during the rst mentioned stroke of each cycle of said head and close the valve during said other stroke thereof.
7. An adhesive applying device comprising a distributing head having a chamber therein and discharge ports communicating therewith, means for supplying adhesive to said chamber, pistonlike means slidably occupying said chamber, and
means operative to effect relative reciprocation of the head and said piston-like means to cause the latter to exert pressure on the adhesive inthe chamber and discharge the `same outwardly through said discharge ports in one stroke of each cycle of reciprocation of said head and piston means and in the other stroke thereof to create suction in said chamber to withdraw adhesive 'from the neighborhood or area of the discharge ports.

An adhesive applying device comprising a distributing head having a chamber therein and discharge ports communicating therewith, means for supplying adhesive to said chamber, pistonlike means slidably occupying said chamber, means operative to eiect relative reciprocation of the' head and said piston-like means to cause the latter to exert pressure on the adhesive in the chamber and discharge the same outwardly through said discharge ports inv one stroke of each 'cycle of reciprocation of said head and piston means and in the other stroke thereof to create suction in said chamber to/withdraw adhesive from the neighborhood or area of the discharge ports, a valve controlling the feed of adhesive to said chamber, and means controlled by the means for reciprocating the head and piston for opening said valve during the rst mentioned stroke and closing the valve during said other stroke.
