Description
J FOSTER Fastening for Vehicle-Seats Patented July 22,1879.
xws wmmea in: r Z l A O it/ I I PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH FOSTER, OF RIOHBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR- VEHICLE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent l lo.
217,790, dated July Q2, 1879; application filed June 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, Josnrn Fos'rER, of Richburg, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VehicleSeat Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fastening for connecting and securing the seat to the body of a vehicle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagonbody and seat connected by my improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is a detailed section of the same.
A represents the body of a vehicle, provided on the inner sides of its side pieces with horizontal cleats or rails B, upon which will rest the end or side pieces, 0, of the seat D. Each of these end or side pieces is on its inner side provided with a metal plate, E, having two cars, a, formed at its lower end, which ears extend inward into a recess cut in the side piece. F is a lever formed with. a hook or catch, 1), at its lower end. This lever is further formed with a projecting ear, (I, which is -inserted and pivoted between the ears to of the plate E.
It will be particularly observed that the ear (1 projects, and is pivoted between the ears a a beyond a vertical line drawn from the outer end of the catch 1), thus holding the catch more firmly beneath the rail B in any upward motion of the seat.
Between the pivot-point and the hook the end of the lever is beveled, so as to form a sharp edge, t, which is forced by the spring I acting on the upper end of the lever against the side of the rail B, and thus holds the seat from slipping forward or backward. These fasteners will hold the seat at any point secure and firm without holes or plugs, and yet can be easily loosened to remove or move the seat, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In aseat-fastener, the leverF, constructed with the catch or hook I) and the car at, said car being pivoted at a point outside of a ver tical line drawn from the outer ends of the catch, substantiallyas and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The vertical sharp edge 45, formed on the lever F between the hook I) and the pivot of the lever, for the purposes herein set forth.-
3. The combination, with a wagon body and seat, of the rails B, plates E, with cars a, levers F, formed. with ears cl, hooks b, and intermediate sharp edges 11, and the springs I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH FOSTER.
