Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE.
OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WASH-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,907, dated January 2*?,l 1880.
Application flied october e, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, OsoAR HAMMEESTEIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Wash- Stands, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a Washstand containing my improvement; Fig. 2, a front of the same. Figs. 3 and et are vertical transverse sections thereof, showing the front door of the stand in different positions.
This invention has for its object to provide a folding tub for use on Wash-stands having running Water, orin other places. The primary object is to so construct or arrange a washtub having a constant supply of Water and a Waste-pipe that a person may Wash the entire body Without necessarily going to the bathroom 5 and to this end I affix to the front door of the wash-stand a tub capable of holding Water, in which a person may stand and Wash the body, While the usual basin in the washstand may serve to Wash the hands and face. The door, being hinged, carries the tub for- Ward for use when swung open. With this folding tub is combined a system of watersupply and waste-pipe, as hereinafter more fully described but, in addition to its use on a Wash-stand, the said folding tub may also be arranged in any other suitable position and in any other suitable connection.
The invention consists in the arrangement of hinged or movable tub, and also in its connection with the supply and With the Wastepipe, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents au ordinary Wash-stand' having a basin, B, to which Water is supplied through the pipe or pipes C and faucet `or faucets D, and from Which it is discharged through the Waste-pipe E or in other suitable manner.
' I desire it to be particularly understood that the construction, arrangement, or in fact even the use of the Washstand itself does not necessarily constitute part of my invention or affect the same in any manner.
F is the door to the lower part of the stand A. This door I represent as being hinged at its lower portion, so that it. may be folded down upon the floor of the room, as shown in Fig. 3, or folded up into the stand, as shown in Fig. 4; but it may be hinged at the sides, if desired. rI his door F carries on its inner face a tub or basin, G, which is in a proper horizontal position Whenever the door is let down, as in Fig. 3, or swung open. The door is, either by .a hollow telescopic hinge, H, (shown in Fig. 1,) or in other suitable manner, connected With a branch, EX, of the .Wastepipe, so that the Water in the tub G may be let into the Waste-pipe through the branch EX Whenever it is desired to have it escape.
As a proper connection, I prefer the telescopic hinge indicated in Fig. l-that is to say, to have the hinge made of tubular parts, one of which', being the one which is fast to the door F, entering the other--namely, that which is fast to the frame A-so that on said hinge the door may be turned, While said hinge will also constitute a hollow channel for the escape of the water; but instead of such telescopic tubing an elastic tubular connection or any other mode of joining the folding door F to the Waste-pipe may be substituted. The supply of Water is furnished through a faucet or faucets, I, which are placed onto or into the frame A, and connected by branches C* with the supply-pipes C, as shown.
Forthe ordinary uses to which I intend to apply this invention-namely, on Wash-standsa person may Wash the face and hands in the basin B in the usual manner, and may then stand in or near the tub G, or on au elevated block or footstool placed therein, or neXt to it, as desired, and Wash the limbs and body after supplying the tub G with water, and may then discharge the Water through the pipes E and E, fold up the tub against the frame A, and leave the Wash-stand in its ordinary appearance, Without having had recourse to the us'ual bath-tub.
It Will be readily seen that this invention is useful in every dwellingnmfthat it permits the ordinary Wash-stand to serve many uses of the bath-room, allowing the entire body to be Washed With hot or cold water, as desired, thus giving the comforts of the bathroom to the occupant of every room that has a Wash-stand, and the same comforts may be enjoyed Whereever, in fact, this folding door be employed, Whether against the wall of the room or in any other place.
IOO
I Claim remains in connection when said tub is folded 1. The door F, secured by ahinge, and proshut, and also when folded open, substantially vided with the tub or basin G and with the as herein shown and described. 15
. branch Waste-pipe EX, for use substantially as 4. The telescopic or hollow hinge H, com- 5 herein shown and described. bined with the folding tub G and escape-pipe 2. The combination 'of the supply pipe or EX, substantially as herein shown and depipes OX and faucet or faucets I with the scribed. y
hinged door F having the tub G on its inner face, and withthe branch waste-pipe EX, sub- OSQAR HAMMERSDEIN' 1o stantially as herein shown and described. Witnesses:
3. The folding` tub G, connected with the EMIL WIENO,
Waste-pipe E by a branch, EX7 With which it TOMPSON B. MOSHER.
