SHIELD OR MASK FOR LIPSTICK Filed March 31, 1941 INVEl/TOQ Patented Dec. 16, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,266,535 sumnn on MASK FOR. ms'rrcx 7 Paul Compan, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application March 31, 1941, Serial No. 386,145
7Claims.
My invention relates to a shield or mask for the lips, that is, to devices adapted to facilitate the application of lipstick to the lips of a person, and among the objects of my invention is to provide a novel shield which may be readily fitted over or associated with the lips in such a manner that lip rouge either liquid or paste may be quickly applied over the correct parts of the lips and in the proper contour to give the most pleasing effect.
An object is to provide a novel lip shield which facilitates quick application of lipstick onto a predetermined area and with the desired contour or line without danger of smearing the lipstick over unwanted areas.
Another object is to provide a novel lip shield which incorporates a novel means whereby the shield or maskis held in proper conformity with the curvature of the lips of the user, and so that the user's hands are free to hold a mirror and lipstick.
A further object is to provide a novel lip shield which is particularly suited to theatrical makeup wherein abrush and liquid is substituted for lipstick and whereby a correct or proper line of the lipstick is obtained when applied. A still further object is to provide a novel lip shield which is particularly simple and ecomical of manufacture, compact and readily carried in a. woman's purse, and which may be made in various patterns to adapt the application of facial features of the user.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention in some of the forms I at present deem preferable.
Figure l is a front view of a lip shield constructed in accordance with my invention, and as it appears when in position for use, the face of the user being shown in fragmentary outline.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken substantially on line 2-2, Fig. l, the user's mouth being indicated in section and in fragmentary outline.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of a modified form of a shield or mask and having an outline different from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is front elevational view analogous to Fig. 3 and showing a further modified form of the mask or lip shield in which the mask serves area to which lipstick or lip coloring should be applied.
Fig. 5 is a plan or edge view of a form of lip shield shown curved to conform to the user's lips and in which the bite lugs are of different form from those illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 6 is a plan or edge view of a form of lip shield shown in Figs. 1-5 but illustrating a further modified form of the bite lugs which are adapted to coact with each other to hold the lip shield in the proper curvature, the normal position thereof being indicated by broken lines.
Fig. 'I is a perspective view of the lip shield in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The shield or mask for lipstick comprising my invention is shown as including a thin, fiat, flexible body member or mask element l in'the form of a frame having an opening 2 that is of a suitable contour or outline delineating the desired configuration through which lipstick may be applied to the lips, so that upon successive applications the lipstick will be of the same outline and properly positioned on the lips of the user. The opening may, of course, vary to suit different types of lips or features of the user: for example, in Fig. 1, the opening 2 may take the form of a well defined cupid's bow 3, or
this shape may be less prominent or curved as indicated by l in Fig. 3. Also, of course, the size of the opening may vary to adapt it to various mouths and facial features of the user- In place of a single opening 2, the mask may merely delineate the margins of the area to which lipstick is to be applied, as indicated by 'at opposite ends of the opening 2. As shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 7, the lugs extend rearwardly from the body member and curve first toward the center of and then away from the rear side of the member i so as to extend into the user's mouth at the corners thereof, the tips of the lugs are arranged to fit between and be clamped between the user's teeth by biting action thereof. The lugs are so shaped that when in position the corners or extremities I of the mask element are held tight against the mouth so that the rouge either by stick or brush may be readilyto delineate the "line" or margins only of the applied.
The lugs may take various forms; as shown in Fig. 5 the lugs, designated 8, may extend don! the rear side of the mask so that several of the front teeth of the user may grip them.
In both the arrangements shown in Figs. 2 and 5 the mask element may be securely held in place by the clamping or biting action of the teeth. That is, the mask element-is normally thin and flat as indicated in Fig. 7. but is held in a curved position by the user's teeth. and the lugs I or I engaging the corners .of the mouth upon the natural tendency of the body member to urge itself into the flat plane shown in Fig. I. In Fig. 6 a modified construction is shown wherein the lugs i0 and I I. connected to and extending from the extremities I, are provided with coacting slot urge itself into a flat plane as shown in Fig. 7,
the material being thin and flexible; and in application of the mask to the users face the corners 0 will be flexed toward each other and the lugs inserted into the mouth whereupon the body element will tend to straighten itself into a flat plane, and the lugs 1 or 8 will be urged away from each other until they come into engagement with the corners of the user's mouth. This acts as a means to center the mask relative to the users mouth whereupon the teeth are clamped together, thereby securely positioning the mask over or around the lips. This construction enables the user to repeatedly apply lipstick to the lips, and at each application obtain the same and proper line, and also each subsequent or successive application will be uniform, of the proper contour,-and properwidth, and in the proper place.
The normal tendency of the body member to urge itself into a fiat plane as shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 6 normally tends to maintain the lugs i0 and Ii in looking position.
Although I have shown and described particular embodiments of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, but desire. to include in the scope of my invention the constructions, combinations, and arrangements embraced in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A shield to facilitate the application of lip rouge comprising: a flexible maskelement defining the area of the users lips to which rouge is to be applied; and means atthe comers of the lip area normally urged away from each other by the resiliency of the mask element for holding said mask in conformity to the users lips.
2. A shield to facilitate the application of lip with the users lips.
rouge comprising; a thin, flat, flexible mask element defining the area of the user's lips to which rouge is to be applied; and means fixed directly to, and extending rearwardly from the back of the mask adapted to be gripped between the teeth of the user to hold said mask in conformity to the user's lips.
3. A shield to facilitate the application of lip rouge comprising: a mask element formed of thin, fiat flexible material adapted to be bent into conformity with the lips of the user, and delineating the prescribed area for the application of rouge; and means extending from. said mask element adjacent th corners of the lips, said means being urged against the mouth by the resiliency of the mask element when in use to hold the mask element against the lips of the user to .permit application of rouge without dislodging the mask element.
4.. A device for facilitating the application of lip rouge comprising: a thin, fiat, and transversely flexible mask element adapted to fit around themargins of the users lips and defining an opefiing exposing the prescribed area of the lips for the application of rouge; and thin, fiat securing elements extending from the mask element adjacent opposite ends of the opening and adapted to be gripped between the teeth'of the user to hold said mask element in conformity 5. A device for facilitating the application of lip .rouge comprising:' a thin, flat, and transversely flexible mask element adapted to fit around the margins of the user's lips and defining an opening exposing the prescribed area of the lips for the application of rouge; and thin, flat securing elements secured to the corners of the mask element in position to be clamped by the teeth of the user thereby to hold the mask element in position; said securing elements extending rearwardly from the mask element and being curved toward the center of the opening on their outer edge and adjacent the point of securement.
6. A device for facilitating the. application of lip rouge comprising: a thin, transversely flexible mask element adapted to fit around the margins of the users lips and defining an opening exposing the prescribed area of the lips for the application of rouge; and coacting securing elements secured to opposite corners of the mask element and adapted with each other to interlock to hold said mask element in a curved position corresponding to the curvature of the users lips.
7. A device for facilitating the application of lip rouge comprising: a thin, fiat, flexible body member having an opening delineating the area for application of lip rouge to the lip; and thin, flat securing elements extending rearwardly from said body member at a point adjacent the corners of the mouth and adapted when in use, to be urged away from each other and into engagement with the corners of the mouth by the resiliency of the body member.
