Description
Sept. 14, 1943. H. T. SNYDER EXPANSION SHIPPING CONTAINER Filed May 29, 1941 INVENTOR Z Snyder Hera/a ATTORNEY shipped.
Patented Sept. 14, 1943 missi nsun-Prise oort'rnmit I Holman as trustee .for' an ownei' cob isoration'tobe organized Application my :29, 194-1, sum no, 395311 t Claims. o; 2 29-62) envelope!- for use as a envelope will fact that many shipping departand shapes ofship- Despite the ments carry numerous sizes characteristic feature of my invention is that ping containers, it is considered commercially impractical to' carry s'izes to fit every article which may pass through said-shipping department. It is, therefore, standard practice today i to install racks holding rolls of corrugated paper board and to cut individual strips from these rolls of paper board and wind the} same around the article and thus container of a particularshapedarticle.
It is an object of my invention to provide an expansible shipping container so that a single size of envelope may be used as a shipping container for articles varying over a, substantial range in size. a I i It is a further object of thiszinventionto provide two face members having positioned thfebe'- tween edge members: and an end member which are folded inwardly and between said face members, so that the article containingcapacity of my envelope will readily expand much beyond its flat or knocked-down capacity.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a fold-overxflap connected. to one face member and having'a plurality of spaced apart connect ing ,means which cooperate with connecting means carried by the other face member .topro'- vide for various capacities of my shipping en= velope. v 1
It is a further object of my invention to provide a shipping container which will reduce the bulk of each individual shipment and at the same time provide a device Has a capacity to envelop articles over, a considerable rang of sizes.
It is a further object of my invention to provide for the saving of time which would otherwise be necessary in selecting the proper size of container or in making containers for individual articles.
It is an object of my invention to provide an form the covering or shipping be that parties handling 'vention, together with shipping container, which have. partioularadvantages when used" for enveloping articles as silk stockings, handkrchiefs, and armor sort and pliable 811 tidles; A particular advantage insucn cases will merc andise in enveiop'es orrny invention will not have the tend.-
enoy to reduce the'siae cr me ackage byronmg,
folding and the like and therefore the merchandisc will be much better protected when shipped in or when na died whil contained in anenvelope ofmy invention. I The above mentioned gene'r'alobjects of my inothers: inherent in the same are attained the device illustrated in the following drawing, the same being a preferred exemplary form of embodiment of my invention,
throughout which drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention incollapsed or knockeddown form;
Fig. 2 is a pers ective embodyin my invention form; I r a 'Fig. 3 is a perspective fragmentary view showing the flap member of my invention folded upon itself and with the fastening means secured;
Fig. 4 is a sectional viewtaken substantially on broken-line 4-1 of Fig. 2 and showing by dash lines an article disposed within-V the shipping .co'nview showing a device tainer of my invention:
Fig. 5 is asectional viewtaken substantiall n broken line 5-*-5 o'f Fig. 2; and v Fig; 6 is a perspective view ofta fragment of a device embodying myinvention and showing particularly the'bottoni portion of the envelope. Referring to the drawing, I provide two oppositely disposed face members It! and H. Edge members ["2 and, ii are oonnectedito said face members I0 and Handare folded inwardly and between said f-ace'menrbers l0 and I I along crease lines. and 2-3. The" end portion M is folded inwardly and between thetwo face members In and II and along crease line 2; Also the end member H connects betweensaid face member H) and H and forms the velope embodying my-invention. v I vExtensions l5: areprovided on each of the edge members I! and I3. When these extensions are folded inwardly, they cooperate with the flap IS in providing a closure for theenvelope and particularly so when the envelope is expanded to its full capacity. The flapmember I6 is provided with-a plurality of spaced apart opening or holes in somewhat expanded bottom: portion of the en' about th outermost opening I8.
I8 which are preferably provided with reinforcing means 20 thereabout. As shown in the drawing it is only necessary to provide such means 28 Preferably the flap member I6 is provided with a plurality of score lines I! to aid in the folding of the flap along said score lines IT. The holes I8 are so positioned that when the flap is folded along the score lines I1, the holes I8 are then in registration. Therefore, whether one fold is made or whether more than one fold is made, the holes I8,
which are in superposed relation because of such fold or folds, will be in registration sosuch holesv I8 may be caused to cooperat with the fastener means I9 to fasten the envelope, The fastener drawing I have shown the same as a metallic member enerally known on the market as a Columbian clasp. A gummed portion 2| is provided on the face member I0 so that flap I6 may holes I8, it is to be expressly understood that other well known means and forms of clasps available on the market may be usedin my in- I vention.
. ,Q I9 may be of any usual construction and in the j Obviously, changes may be made in the form,
dimensionsand arrangements of the parts of be glued to said face member II) as well as mechanically secured thereto by the clasp or fastener, I9. ,Whilethe usual practice is to provide on the flap the gummed surface orglued portion, which will adhere upon wetting, in my invention I employ the gummed portion 2| on the face member I6 so that the flap I6 may be adhered thereto by gluing, regardless of the extent of the fo ing of said flap I6. 7,
In the use of devicesembodying my invention, the shipping clerk will be provided with a number of sizes of suchdevices. Obviously, my device may not be expanded to contain articles of every size, but it is subject to expansion so that it will contain articles over a very substantial range and eliminate the need for the many sizes of envelopes now carried by the shipping'clerks. 'I'he'shipping'clerk will therefore select an envelope embodying my invention where the range of capacity thereof meets the size of the article to be shipped. Thereafter the face, member III will be moved somewhat upwardly to the-extent necessary to contain the article withinthe envelope. Then the extensions I5 will be folded inwardly and the flap I6 will be folded to the extent desired along a scoreline or lines I! so that an opening or hole I8 will be moved in registration with the fastener or clasp I9. In accordance with the usual practice, the clasp I9 will be moved out of the flattened position shown in Fig. 2 so that the prongs of said clasp I9 may be projected through an opening I8. The opening I8 may be composed of one or more of said holes I8, depending upon the extent of folding of the flap I6,
Then the prongs of said clasp I9 are flattened or moved into securing position; Of course if the flap I6 is to be glued tothe face member ID, the portions 2| will be wetted beforethe engagement 'of the clasp I9. x In Fig. 3 I have shown the device of my invention in a position it would assume when containing a substantially flat article so that the flap I6 has been folded on two score lines. I1 and the three holes I8 are shown in registration and .the prongs of the clasp I9 have been projected through said holes I8. 1 Int-Fig. 4-1 have shown, by dash lines, a larger article contained within the device of my invention so that only one of the holes I8 is'presented tothe fastener or clasp my invention, without departing from the principle'thereof, the above setting forth only a preferred form of embodiment.
I claim: I
