Description

(HoModeL) H. P. ROBERTS.
Leather Skiving Machine.
N6. 235,172. Patented Dec. 7, I880.
N-PETERS. PHOTU-LITHOGRAPHER.WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY P. ROBERTS, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK W. ADAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
LEATHER-SKIVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,172, dated December '7, 1880.
Application filed September 16, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. ROBERTS, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented an 1mprovement in Leather-Skiving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of machines employed for splitting or skiving leather; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a front elevation. side elevation. construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable stand or frame for supporting the operatin g parts of the device.
B B represent two standards rising from the top of the frame A, and between these standards are suitably journaled the metallic rollers (J O, operated. by a crank-handle, 1), in the usual manner. The roller is journaled in boxes to, which have a vertical sliding movement in the standards, and the boxes rest upon the inner ends of the cam-levers D, pivoted to said frames. The outer ends of these levers D are connected to a treadle-lever, E, by the rod P, the whole being so arranged that the roller 0 may be raised or lowered to or from the roller 0, so as to exert a greater or lesser pressure upon the leather to be operated upon.
F represents a knife, which is secured to the offset b of the standards, and Gr is a springp-late secured to the offset 0 of the standards, the inner edges of the plate G and knife F being so adjusted as to form a throat, d. Above the knife is a roller, H, suitably journaled in Fig. 2 is a Figs. 3 and 4 are details of a frame, I, which latter is properly secured in guides J, which have a vertical sliding movement in the standards B. A small stud, e, rises from the top of the guides J, and to 5 these studs are pivotaily secured the outer ends of the levers K. These levers are fulcrumed at h in the head L, which spans the top of the standards, and secures them rigidly together. The inner ends of thelevers K are 0 pivotally secured to the swivel-head M upon the lower end of the screw N, threaded through the head L, and which carries a hand-wheel, O.
In practice the roller H may be raised or depressed by rotating the screw N, which, 5 5 through the connections hereinbefore described, causes the guides to slide up or down in the standards, and thus adjust the roller to the desired relative position with the knife, so that the latter will cut a thicker or thinner 6o quantity from the leather presented to it, while the spring-plate G holds up the advancing portion ofthe leather and prevents the knife from cutting too deeply or uneven. After the leather has been cut it is presented to the rollers G O, which are brought together, so as to firmly squeeze the leather as it passes between them.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination, with the stationary knife F and spring-plate G, of the swinging roller H, journaled in the frame 1, guides J, carrying the frame I, levers K, pivoted to the guides and head, head L, screw N, and swivelhead M, secured to the lower end of the screw and pivotally secured to the inner ends of the levers K, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
