UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER W. BRINKERHOFF, OF UPPER SANDUSKY, OHIO.
BOOT AND SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,211, dated January 4:, 1881.
' Application filed May 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I ALEXANDER W. BRINK- ERHOFF, of Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have made new and useful Improvements in Heels for Boots and Shoes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts, and in which- Figure 1 shows the position of the heel when the person is standing erect. Fig. 2 shows the position of the heel when the same comes in contact with the floor in the act of walking. Fig. 3 shows the point of contact in heels as heretofore made. Fig. 4 shows the under side of a heel-cap to be used in completing this form of heel, when the cap is used as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which I do not claim in this application, but reserve the right to include in another application.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing boot and shoe heels with an upward and backward inclined treading-surface, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my improvement in boot and shoe heels, I will now fully and clearly describe the method of doing so.
The heel is composed of a series of lifts or layers of leather, which, when high enough to receive the last lift, and before applying the same, are dressed oft' backward and upward from the front of the heel, giving it a rocking action in walking. When shaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the last lift, covering the whole treading-surface, is applied and held in place by two rows of nails all around near its edge, when the work is fully completed. When finished thefrontendof the heel isfrom one-fourth to one-half an inch deeper than at its rear end, to secure a.- broad treading-surface, according to the size of the boot or shoe, and hence its rear end will not wear off, and the boot or shoe cannot run over, and repairing or replacing of 5 heels becomes almost unnecessary.
The object of my invention is to rest or support the weight of the body in walking on a point under the heel, between the front and rear muscles of the leg, and thereby remove all violent and arbitrary strain on them; also, to save the heel from wear at and near its rear end or sides, causing the boot or shoe to become crooked, and producing severe strain upon the ankle, which often results in great injury to the wearer; also, to save the expense from frequent repairing of the heels of boots and shoes when made in the usual manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A boot or shoe heel having a backward and upward inclined treading-surface, as -shown at O, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witnesses, the day and year hereinbefore written.
ALEXANDER W. BRINKERHOFF.
Witnesses J. H. MAXWELL, M. H. BRINKERHOFF.
