ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. SGHUMAKER, OF ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUZZLE-GAME BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 237,053, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed October 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern Be-it known that I, GHAELEs J. SGHUMA- RER, of Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle-Game Board, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and amusing puzzle, which is very simple, is easy to comprehend, and which permits of numerousvariations.
The invention consists in a sheet or board having twenty-one numbers, arranged in the shape of an Octagon, which numbers are connected with each other by means of a series of rectangular and radial lines. Each number is provided with a pin, and to solve the puzzle all pins must be taken by one pin, by means of jumpin g over the others upon a vacant numberthat is, a number from'which pins have been removed-and when the last pin is taken the players pin must jump into a number that has been previously designated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my new puzzle. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the pins or studs used.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
Twenty-one numerals are printed, painted, stamped, embossed, or engraved on a sheet, R, of card-board or paper, in the shape ot' an Octagon, and the several numbers are connected with each other by means of a series of rectangular lines, A, and diagonal lines B. In the case shown each number is surrounded bya circle, but may be surrounded byany other suitable ligure, and Vthe board or sheet may be ornamented in any desired manner. Each num- 'ber is provided with an aperture, C, to receive a pin, D, provided with a head, E. The sheet of paper upon which the puzzle is printed is fastened upon a piece ot' soft wood, pasteboard, or any other suitable material. The numbers are to be distributed within the Octagonv at reg- `nlar distances, but no attention need be paid to their numerical order, ex'ceptthat the nurn- `ber 21, from which the puzzle derives its name, shall be printed more conspicuously than the rest and in the middle of the Octagon.
The puzzle is to be solved in the following manner: Apin, D, is placel into the aperture of every number, uporm 1 li1`the player seleots the number he desires to play forfor instance, 14. Then one pin-for instance, the one on No. 4-.is removed, and the player now opens the game by jumping over pins into blank number spaces-that is, into a number from which the pin has been removed. The pins that have been jumped are removed. As stated above, we assume that pin No.4 has been removed, and consequently the player can jump with No.11 over No. 8 into No. 4, and the pin of No. 8 is removed, or the player mayjump With N o. l0 over No. 7 into No. 4, or with No. 17 over No. 2l into No. 4. To Win the game or solve the puzzle the player must play in such a manner that the last pin jumps into No. 14, the number rst selected. If he has previouslyjumped so that this is impossible he has lost the game.
The position of the pins can only be changed by jumping.
The player can play for any desired number and remove any desired pin from the board before beginning to play, thus permitting innumerable variations of the game.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described puzzle, consisting` of a board or sheet with a series of numbers connected by rectangular Iand diagonal lines Iixed thereon, and of a series of pins or pegs to be placed in the apertures adjoining the numbers, substantially as herein shown and described, and for' the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the sheet R, having twenty-one numerals, connected by rectangular lines A and diagonal lines B., printed or otherwise xed thereon, of the pins D D, t ting in the apertures G G of each number, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
