SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed February 28, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, EDWARD E. PORTER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Chair for Attaching to Door-Steps, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is an improvement in the class of devices illustrated in my Patent No. 227,832, patented May 18, 1880, and in which a chair or seat is so constructed as to adapt it to be secured to the curb or side wall of a flight of door-steps, and, when done with, of being compactly folded for storage or shipment.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an under-side perspective view of a chair embodying my improvement, the chair being showniu its open condition. Fig.2 is an under side plan of the same, and illustrating a modification of my clamp -adjusting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my chair in position upon a step-curb. Fi g. 4 represents my chair in its folded condition.
A may represent the side or inclosing wall of a flight of door-steps, B.
" O is my chair-seat, having near its rear portion a mortise, c, for tongue or tenon d at foot 4. The seat and back may be additionally connected by hinged braces E, or may be rigidly attached in the ordinary manner.

(No model.)
jaws to any specific adjustment to fit and grasp the'pa-rticular curb on which it is used.
Instead of said slotted bar I may employ a screw-threaded brace, J, as shown in Fig. 2, a nut, K, on said brace serving to draw and hold the clamp-jaws tightly against the vertical portions of the curb.
Instead of two intersecting clamp-jaws four jaws and two adjusting-screws may be provided.
A valuable peculiarity of my present device over that described in my patent aforesaid is its capacity for use as an ordinary chair. Another advantage over said patent is the capacity of my cross-bar clamp to embrace a much greater variety of sizes of curb. Still another advantage is the dispensing with an intermediate plate, the chair-seat being pivoted to the clamp direct.
I claim as new and of my invention- A chair for attachment to house door-steps, having pivoted to the under side of its seat cross-bars having legs and adapted to form jaw-clamps F F, in combination with a suitable locking device.
In testimony of which invention 1 hereunto Attest GEO. H. KNIGHT, SAML. S. CARPENTER.
