0 INVENTOR VIT/766ml @llamara/elli lag/ ' ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 17, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT 1 OFFICE 2,436,297 BOTTLE CAP Vincent Guarnaschelli, Corona, N. Y. Application July 25, 1944, Serial No. 546,464
This invention relates to bottle caps, and aims to provide a novel removable and replaceable cap so constructed that it may be slid on to provide a. bottle seal and slid olf to obtain access to the contents. Y
Another object of the invention is the provision of releasable and yieldable locking means forming part of the cap, whereby the cap is releasably locked in sealing position on the bottle.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawings. It is to be noted that the drawings are intended to serve the purpose of illustration only, and it is neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to the specic details of construction shown except insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring brieiiy to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a bottom perspective view of the cap with a washer mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the cap.
Fig. 3 is a front View of the cap when stood on one side.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing the cap applied to a bottle with a washer mounted thereunder.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational View of a modiiied form of the cap applied to a bottle.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the modified form of the cap, applied to a bottle.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I9 indicates the cap as a whole, which ls formed out of a unitary sheet or piece of metal, plastic, rubber, or any other composition or material. The cap I comprises a roof II having a concentric depression dished out at I 2 to form on the underside of the roof an annular flat groove I3 adapted to have a washer I4 seated therein.
The roof I I of the cap has an apron I depending from a portion of the periphery thereof, that is, a portion in excess of one-half of the periphery, thereby leaving an opening or mouth I6 at what will be termed the front end of the cap. The apron I5 is circular in conformation. A lip I'I is formed along the lower edge of the apron I5, as by bending the same inward, and the internal periphery I8 of this lip is semicircular intermediate the extremities thereof but the latter have their mutually opposed edges I9 mutually parallel and spaced from each other at a distance equal to the diameter of the semi-circular peripheral 1 Claim. (Cl. 215-38) edge I8 of the lip I'I. Thus, excepting for the open end or mouth I6, the grooved portion of the roof II, the apron I5, and the lip I'I, form or enclose a semi-annular recess. 20 having at each end thereof a straight extension recess 2I. The' washer I4,Vwhen set into its groove I3, occupies the Aupper portion of the recess 2li-2|. It is apparent that' the cap' maybe readily slid on to a bottle 22 by moving it in the direction of the ar-` row, Fig. 5, after applying the mouth IB of the cap to the top of the bottle, in an obvious manner. The cap may of course be made to use without a washer or planchet, without altering the invention in any manner. The distance between the lip edges I9 of the straight front extensions of the recess 20--2I obviously is substantially the same as the diameter of the bottlegroove 23, whence the cap may be thus slid into the position shown in Fig. 5 without obstruction.
Provision is made as follows to provide a tight yet releasable or yieldable securement of the cap in the mounted position shown in Fig. 5. At three peripherally spaced positions, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, an upwardly curved indentation 24 or 25 is formed in both the lip II and the apron I5, as by punching or stamping, thereby providing somewhat yieldable projections which project into the recess 20 at the lower edge thereof. Thus, as the cap is being slid into the position shown in Fig. 5, these projections'obviously yieldably engage the lower edge of the collar 26 of the bottle. The intermediate projection 25, which is positioned at the rear of the cap opposite the mouth I6, might be omitted without affecting the pressure of the mounted cap on the bottle; but it serves as a yieldable aid to the removal of the cap by pressing the front end thereof and urging it in a direction opposite that of the arrow, Fig. 5. It is to be noted that the forward end of the roof of the cap, shown at 21, above the mouth I 6, is turned down along its edge to provide a reduced iiange which grips the forward end ofthe washer and aids in applying downward pressure on the mounted cap.
The modiled form of the cap 28 shown in Figs.
i I .i 2,436,297
It is apparent from the above that a slidable bottle cap or seal has been provided which may very easily be applied to or removed from the bottle, and which will serve to provide just as tight a seal upon reapplying itrafteniirstopenins the bottle as the 'origjinalseal, tlie cap-Tsv fn; no way damaged or altered by the ac't of removall The straight or tangential extremities of the lipM-r Y I1, which are mutually parallel and spaced apat a distance equal to the diameter of the bteie groove 23, permit of this sldable-movementFZ which would be impossible if the said trhies were merely concentric continiiaiirisrofthietfseziie;
circular lip periphery I8.
Obviously, modications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention.v
I claim: K y
A hottie cap for a bottienavingan annmarnerad at its mouth, comprising asubstantially"iscuikemember adapted to cover'the I'r'i'oihfcif the bottle, said member having a depending peripheral Harigev extending from the peripheflaied'gftiereof",said flange having a cut'cut at'theffoiitiof thecapfof;
'projebtibns @being adapted to engage the underside o'f said bead to clamp said cap on said mouth, 'said flange having inwardly extending indenta- 'ti'ns in the sides thereof thereby providing finger ig"iiiii'ecesses for said cap.
