PAPER BOX FOR GIGARETTES. No. 244,523. Patented July 19,1881. I D
PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BAMBERGER, Old-BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
(PAPER BOX FOR CIGARETTES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,523, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed J mm 13, 1881.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that 1, JULIUs BAMBERGER, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes for Cigarettes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in paper boxes which are designed especially for cigarettes; and it consists in the peculiar manner of cutting the blanks from which the boxes are formed, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a small shallow box which is specially adapted for carrying cigarettes in the pocket, and which is sealed tightly at the ends and provvided with a lid which, after being closed on the top of the box, is held in position by a suitable lock.
Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the blanks after it has been stamped out. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the box, showing the lid raised.
A represents the blank, which is cut or stamped from a piece of paper of any thickness, and which has two cuts made at each of its ends, so as to form the small corner-pieces B. These corner-pieces are thus separated from the end pieces, (J, which will be made suitably longer than the corner-pieces, though of the same width. From the two inner corner-pieces'the edge is cut away, as shown, so as to form the'lid D, which is just wide enough to cover the box after it has been formed,'and
(Model) which lid is provided with the tongue G, which 40 blank thus formed is provided with four creases,
1, 2, 3, and 4, the first three of which make the lines upon which the two sides are to be bent, and the fourth shows where the tongue upon the lid is to be turned down. Through the outer side of the box is cut the slit I, into which the tongue G is made to catch, and thus form a lock for holding the lid in position when the box is closed. After the blank has thus been formed the corner-pieces B are turned inward toward each other, and then the end pieces, 0, are turned up outside of them, and the corner-pieces are pasted to the inner sides of the end pieces, as shown, and the body of the box is completed. The lid is just wide enough to cover the box when it is closed, and
thus keep its contents not only from spilling out, but from becoming too dry.
When the lid is closed down upon the top of the box and the tongue G is inserted into the slit I, a small, neat, and compact box, especially formed for cigarettes, is produced.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A paper box formed of the blank A, which is provided with the corner-pieces B, the end pieces, 0, the cover D, tongue G, and slit I, all folded and secured substantially as shown and described. 5
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS BAMBERGER.
