SCREEN AND STORM SASH HANGEQR Filed April 24, 1945 Patented July 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to certain new and. useful improvements in screen and storm sash hangers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a hanger for screen and storm sash units that eliminates the usual type of hook and apertured plate and provides a construction of hanger that is automatic during assembly of the parts thereof while placing the unit in hung position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a screen and storm sash hanger wherein the two parts of the hanger member respectively carried by the window frame and screen or storm sash are of such construction whereby the upper end of the unit may be positioned between the vertical side rails of a window frame, with the lower end of the screen or sash conveniently held in position in proximity of the window frame durin upward movement of the unit while mounting the same, thereby eliminating the necessity of projecting the unit a considerable distance outwardly of the window opening during mounting thereof.
With the above and other objects in view that will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Figure '7 is a developed plan view of the sheet from which the hook member is formed, and
Figure 8 is a side elevational View of a modified form of the upper resilient clip member.
While the accompanying drawing discloses a window screen mounted within a window opening and the invention will be so described, it is to be understood that the hanger disclosed herein is intended for the mounting of both window screens and storm sashes, As shown in Figures 1 and 2 the window frame comprises a head rail l0 and mounted within the opening of said window frame there is shown a screen ll having a top rail l2.
The hanger for the screen H is formed of two parts, the upper part thereof designated in general by the reference character [3 being a resilient clip member adapted for attachment to the head rail I0 of the window frame, while the other part of the hanger designated in general by the reference character I4 is herein referred to as a bar hanger member due to its relation relative to the clip member during the positioning and removal of the unit for attachment to the head rail l2 of the screen. The clip member I3 is preferably formed of sheet metal as by a stamping operation as shown in Figure 6, and in the initial construction thereof the blank from which the clip member is formed comprises a body portion I5 having an elongated resilient leg l6 extending from one end thereof. Side walls I! extend from opposite sides of the body portion 15 and are bendable in the same direction on weakened lines l8 to extend in parallelism at one side of said body portion. The free outer edge of each side wall l1 intermediate its ends is formed with a U-shaped notch IQ for purposes presently to appear. Also, the body portion I5 has a pair of openings 20 formed therein respectively adjacent the lower corners and a further opening 2| centrally thereof and adjacent the opposite end of the body portion I5 together with the formation of a slightly larger opening 22 adjacent the outer end of the leg Hi. The blank of Figure 6 is manipulated by suitable bending operations to transform it into the configuration illustrated more clearly in Figure 5 which results in the provision of the side walls I! while the leg l6 adjacent the body portion [5 is upwardly and downwardly arched as at Ilia to form a vertical leg portion I6b overlying the body portion l5 while the lower terminal end of the leg portion lfib is flared outwardly as at I60. From the blank illustrated in Figure 6 and the completely formed clip member l3 illustrated in Figure 5, it will be observed that the upper edges Ila of the side wall H extend in straight horizontal lines, while the lower edges Nb of said side walls are curved from the free edges of the side walls toward the body portion Hi to cooperate with the outwardly flared end I of the leg portion 16b to form a V-shaped entrance opening at the lower end of the clip member for reception of the hook member M.
The bar hanger member I4 is illustrated in developed plan view in Figure 7 and resulting from a stamping operation comprises a body portion 23 having upwardly inclined side extensions 24 that terminate in a pair of upstanding side wall portions 25, the upwardly inclined portions 24 being bendable upon the weakened lines 26 to present the side wall portion 25 in parallelism. The body portion 23 has a pair of openings 2'! formed therein and an opening 28 is formed in the upper end of each side wall portion 25, and with the latter moved into parallelism a bar 29 is inserted in said openings 28 with the ends of said pin swaged or otherwise anchored as at 30 in said openings.
The clip members l3 are arranged in pairs and secured to the upper rail 10 of the window frame, preferably by screws or the like inserted through the openings 20 below the lip 16c of the resilient front leg, while the opening 22 in the leg [61) permits insertion of a screw driver for placing a screw in the opening 2| in the body portion 15. The bar hanger members 14 are also arranged in pairs to mate with the clip members 13 and are secured to the upper rail 12 of the screen I I.
It is obvious that when a screen I i is tobe hung, it is only necessary to support the same with the bars 29 in engagement with the bar guiding surfaces llb on the clip members l3 and move the screen ll upwardly until the bars 29 force in between the downwardly curved portion l6b of the clip members 13 until the bars 29 slip into the notches l9 in said clip members l3, whereupon the resiliency of the said downwardly curved portions l6b of the clips I3 will hold the parts of the hanger in assembled position.
A slightly modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figure 8 which shows the notches 19a as being slightly depressed at their lower sides to form a lower seat for the pins of the hook members, the resilient leg IBb of the clip member retaining the bars 29 in the notches Hill. It is to be noted that in both forms of the invention the resiliency of the arched portion Mia and leg 16b of the clip member is sufiicient to retain the bars 29 of the hook members in either of the slots I9 or I911.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
In a hanger of the character described, a resilient clip member and a coacting bar hanger member adapted to be secured respectively to the face of a window frame and the face of a screen frame, said clip having a window frame engaging portion with transversely spaced forwardly extending sides having bar guiding surfaces and inwardly directed bar receiving and supporting notches in their forward edges and the upper portion of said window frame-engaging portion being curved forwardly and downwardly to overlie said notches to provide a resilient keeper, said bar hanger member having a window screen engaging base portion with forwardly and upwardly extending sides, and a cross bar between the upper ends of said sides adapted to engage and be guided by the bar guiding surfaces on said clip as said bar is attached to the clip and the crossbar is resiliently forced into and held in said notches.
