3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to undergarments for men and boys and is a division of my copending application Ser. No. 21,101, filed April 15, 1948, for improvements in Undergarment construction.
An object of this invention is to provide an undergarment of the type known as shorts, briefs or the like where at least a portion of the garment is made elastic in one direction by means of an insert or gusset which is stretchable in at least one direction, the insert or gusset being formed of aknit fabric whereas the body of the garment is formed of a woven `material.
Another object of this invention is to provide an undergarment which is of the body conforming type with the major portion of the garment non-stretchable and the remaining portion of the garment stretchable in at least one direction.
A further object of this invention is to provide an undergarment including a laterally stretchable crotch piece and a front and rear portion formed of a woven non-stretchable material and the rear portion having triangular shaped gussets formed of laterally stretchable material.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail rear elevation of an undergarment constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the garment shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing there is disclosed an embodiment of this invention generally designated as 28. The garment 28 includes a iront 28 and a rear generally designated as 30. The rear 30 is formed of outer members 3| which may be formed integral with the front 29. The rear 3l) also includes a centrally disposed Vertical panel 32. The outer members 3| are secured to the rear center panel 32 only at the top thereof by means of an overlapping seamsecured by stitching. The inner edges of the outer panels 3| are downwardly4 divergent with respect to the center panel 32 leaving triangularly shapedv cut-outs therebetween. These triangularly shaped cut-outs are filled by the gussets 33 which are formed of a one-way stretchable material therebyforming outwardly ared leg members 34 and also providing for horizontal stretching of the garment in the seat thereof. The panels or inserts or gussets 33 are formed integral with inner leg members 35 and forwardly extending crotch piece 36 which is secured between the inner leg members 35 and the rear panel 32. The crotch piece 36 extends upwardly at the front of the garment as indicated at 31 in Figure 2 and the front member 29 is formed with an inverted U-shaped crotch cutout 38 for the purpose of receiving the upwardly extending member 31 of the crotch piece by means of the stitching 39. The front 29 above the crotch cut-out 38 is formed with a vertically extending y front opening 40 for the purpose of providing easy ingress and egress from the garment. The one-way stretchable inserts or gussets 33 and the crotch piece 36 are preferably formed from the knit material so that the garment may be readily laundered and will return to its original configuration after each washing.
The top of the garment is provided with a waist-band 4| having a series of gathers 42 extending therearound. Within the waist-band there is provided a horizontally stretchable elastic band for the purpose of conforming the top of the garment to the figure of the wearer. By this construction I have provided an undergarment which will achieve snug non-binding fitting across the seat through the crotch and about the waist.
I do not mean to conlne myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed but claim al1 variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. An undergarment construction comprising a front portion having integral outer rear panels extending therefrom and formed of a nonstretchable woven fabric, a central rear panel joined to said outer rear panels adjacent the top thereof, gussets formed ofl a knit stretchable material disposed between said outer and central rear panels and joined thereto, said front portion having an inverted U-shaped crotch cutout, and a forwardly extending crotch insert integral with said gussets joined to said front portion along said crotch cut-out and to said central rear panel along the bottom edge thereof.
2. An vundergarment construction comprising a front portioniormed of a non-stretchable woven fabriclhaving-a-fly opening along a vertical cen Y ter linefthe'reofg non-stretchable outer rear panels integral with said front portion and having outwardly dared rear edges, a non-stretchable central rear panel joined to said outer panel rear edges at the top thereof, horizontally stretchable Y gussets connecting said outer rear panels to said central rear panel, an inverted U-shaped crotch cut-out in said front portion, and a crotch insert formed of horizontally stretchable knit material integral with said gussets and joined to said front portion. along `said crotch cut-out and to said central rear panel along the bottom edge thereof, the top edges of said front portion, outer rear panels and central rear panel forming a waist-band having gathers therein and including an elasticised band for conforming said waistband to the figure of the wearer.
3. An undergarment comprising a front portion having integral outereai' panels extending therefrom, a central rear panei joined to said outer panels adjacent the top thereof, gus-V sets formed of stretchable material disposed between said outer and central rear panels and Ajoined thereto, and a forwardly extending crotch insert integra-1 with said gussets joined to said front portion intermediate said outer rear panels and to the bottom edge of said central rear panel.
