Description

Nov. 27, 1951 R. STEINER HAIR DRIER COMBINED WITH COMB Filed July 30, 1949 INVENTOR. Rickard Shaker u l l m l Illi- Patented Nov. 27, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFKZE HAIR DRIER COMBINED WITH COMB Richard Steiner, New York, N. Y.
Application July 30, 1949, Serial No. 107,667
2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to improvements in hair driers and, more specifically, to that type of portabledrier which a person can hold in one hand and guide along and around his or her head, and from which emanates a stream of pre-heat- .ed air.
One object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which has an air outlet in the form of a stepped nozzle or the like to which is detachably secured a comb whose teeth extend beyond the air outlet in the direction of the air streaming out of the device, so that a person can comb his or her hair simultaneously while drying it. I have found that wet hair can be dried faster when hot air is applied while combing the hair, and my new and improved hair drier combined with comb is designed for greatly facilitating the drying of hair and for reducing to a minimum the time required for hair drying.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is provided with means which facilitate an exchanging of combs of different fineness on the device, and which make it possible to exchange one comb for another quickly and easily and without the use of any tools as well as without the application of any considerable amount of skill.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described K which is simple in construction, so that it can be manufactured and sold at a relatively low price, and which is also light in weight, of a small size, easy to operate, sturdy, durable, and well adapted to withstand the rough useage to which devices of this type frequently are subjected.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top view of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation, partially in longitudinal section;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a detailed cross-section of a clamp.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. 7
In the drawing the numeral I denotes a housing which preferably has a cylindrical main portion, that is about two to three inches in diameter so that it can be grasped conveniently with one hand of the operator, and which is closed at both ends by cup-shaped members, one of which has one or more air inlet openings, while the other cup-shaped member has an air outlet. The latter preferably has a flange section extending outwardly from the member 2 and having wide side portions 3 and 4. The end sections of the side portion 4 are curved inwardly toward the ends of the side portion 3. Thus the flange section of the air outlet is substantially oblong in cross-section, and the portion 3 protrudes lengthwise beyond the portion 4. A comb 5, which has comb teeth extended from a back whose main portion is recessed and is thinner than that portion from which the comb teeth are extended, is detachably attached to the flange portion 3 in the manner shown in the drawing. where it will be seen (Fig. 3) that within the recess of the comb back formed by said recessed main portion there rests the flange portion 3. The comb 5 can be attached to the portion 3 by means of screws or the like. However, I prefer to attach the comb 5 by means of resilient clamps 6 which engage the vertical edge portions of the comb back as well as of the flange portion 3. The clamps 6 preferably are U-shaped in crosssection and adapted for engaging the parts 3 and 5.
An electrical heating unit 1 is secured to the inner side of the member 2 by means of a ring member 8 and arms 9 which radiate from the member 8 and connect it to the member 2. A blower unit consisting of a fan blade l0 and an electric motor I l is positioned within the housing I for drawing a stream of air therethrough.
The housing I and the member 2 preferably are made of hard rubber, or plastic material, or of any other suitable light-weight insulating material, and a pair of switches l2 and I3, for independently controlling the heater current and the motor current respectively, are provided at the outer side of the housing I. The device can ,be connected to a source of current, such as an outlet plug socket, by means of an electric cord M, which is extended through the cup-shaped member IS. The latter has one or several air inlet openings l6.
Each device is to be sold with a plurality of combs of different teeth fineness. Each of said combs can be snapped on and off the nozzle portion 3 easily by means of the clamps 6.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and difierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and notin a limiting sense.
Having thus fully'described'my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
1. A hair drier comprising a housing which consists of a cylindrical member that is closed at each end by a cup-shaped member, one of said cup-shaped members having an air inlet while the other has an air outlet that extends transversely over its bottom portion and has an outwardly extending flange section, a blower unit positioned within said housing for drawing a stream of air through said housing and forcing it out of said air outlet, electrical air heating means disposed in the path of the air stream withinthat cup-shaped member of the housing which .is provided with the air outlet, a comb having a recessed back portion within whose recess is heated the flange section of said air outlet and having teeth which are extended outwardly from said air outlet in the direction of the air stream, and clamping means engaging opposite end portions of said flange section and of the back of said comb.
2. A hair drier comprising a housing having an air inlet and an air outlet, said air outlet having an outwardly extending flange section which 4 is oblong in cross-section and one wide side portion of which protrudes lengthwise beyond the 0pposite wide side portion of said flange section, a blower unit positioned within said housing for drawing a stream of air through said housing and forcing it out of said air outlet, electrical air heating means disposed in the path of the air stream within said housing, a comb having comb teeth extended from a back whose main portion isrecessed and is thinner than that portion from which the comb teeth are extended, within the recess of the comb back formed by said recessed main portion there being seated that wide side portion of the air outlet flange section which protrudes beyond the other side portion of said flange section, and resilient clamps engaging said REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
