1 Claim.
This invention relates to a new and improved type holder socket.
Stamping or foil imprinting machines such as shown in my copending patent applications entitled Type Holding Apparatus and Foil Feeding Device for Stamping Machines nd having Serial Numbers 66,460 and 66,459 respectively, employ "sockets in the stamping head thereof for receiving and holding type holders. Various means "have been employed to effect a locking of the holder within the socket, but few if any have possessed the combined qualities of economy and effectiveness.
It is therefore a principal object of this invention to rovide means ina type holder socket for maintaining the holder against relative vertical swinging the shim about its hinge to thereby lock the holder within the socket.
A still further important object of this invention is to provide shim means disposed longitudinally in the dovetail joint of a socket and having end means turned inwardly to ermit sliding of an article into the socket and simultaneously pushing it to a stop for easy and accurate centering.
Other and further important objects will become apparent from the disclosures in the following specification and accompanying drawing.

The reference numeral l0 indicates generally a vertically reciprocable member which is mounted in a stamping machine such as shown in my copending application on a foil feeding device for stamping machines mentioned above. A' type holder socket II is mounted as aunitary part with, and at the bottom of the vertically reciprocable member Hi. The holding socket H is equipped with a channel slot E2 on its underside having dovetail or undercut sides 13 and I4 respectively. 'A type holder 15 is adaptedto slide within'the channel 12 by reason of its having mating dovetailed end projections lBand ll.
Type is put in the holder [5 and upon moving the entire unit downwardly, an impression will be made on any object positioned on a platen provided therefor.
In order to make'a uniform impression the type must remain fixed in an identical position on'each impressing movement thereof. To provide maximum utility the type holder must also be capable of being easily removed from the socket holder and the type holder must then be capable of reinsertion for resuming its original position. In view ofthis it is necessary that the fit of the type holder within the'holding socket be relatively snug. Because of the snug fit, means is provided to permit easy insertion or removal of the type holding memberand still accomplish a tight fit between the holder and socket by a simply operated mechanism interposed between the socket and type holder.
A shim i8 is placed between and within the dovetailed members l4 and H. This shim or locking member, as it is employed in this apparatus, is shown in detail in Figs. 6, '7 and 8. The shim is provided with a tapered end l9 and is further provided with a threaded hole at 20. As best shown in Figures 1 and 2, the shim i8 is fastened to the type holding socket in the position indicated by means of a screw type rivet 2i passing through and threadedly engaging the hole 20 in the him and through an aligned opening 22 in the socket side wall. The screw rivet 2| holding the shim to the socket H is somewhat loose so that the shim It may have some relative movement with respect to the type I holder H.
In addition to the hinging about the loose rivet the shim is made of a sufliciently resilient brass or other metallic material permitting it a certain amount of bending adjacent the rivet end I9 is located flush with the end 23 of the type holder socket II. A type holder may there upon be easily inserted within the channel l2 tion 25 which engages a threaded aperture in the side 26 of the type holder socket II at a position spaced longitudinally from the rivet supporting member 2 I. The thumb screw 24 is tightened after insertion of the type holder and the shim I8 swings about the rivet support 2I a a.
hinge or bending support and the looseness permits some translational movement of the shim I8 inwardly against the type holder I5. After this movement of the shim I8 the type holder is locked in position andis not removable from the type holder socket I I except by loosening of the thumb screw 24. Loosening of the thumb screw 24 permits the shim I8 to move laterally away from the type holder I5.
As best shown in Figure 5 the rivet 2| is shown as constituting a screw having a head 21 and a threaded shank portion 28 passing through the type holding socket and engaging the shim I8 the type holder. Sliding of the type holder continues until it strikes the stop 29 on the inner end of the shim. The type holder is now centered within the head and it is locked in that position by a tightening of the thumb set screw 24. The shim thereupon tightens against the type holder, holding it fixed with respect to the stamping head socket. Repeated impressions may now be made with the stamping machine and there is every assurance that the type will remain in fixed position and that it will be properly centered on the platen.
Many details of construction may be varied throughout a wide range without departing from holding socket II by reason of the bent end 29 v forming a stop. The type holder I5 with its type therein is adapted fOr' sliding into the type holder socket I I at the end 23 thereof, over the bevelled end I9 of the shim I 8, and continues until the 23, and the operator is assured that th'e'impressions made by the stamping machine will occur in an identical location on the platen or other base upon which the imprinting is made regardless of the number of operations of the machine or the number of times the type holder changed. When the type holder is fully centered in the socket I I, the thumb screw 24 is tightened, causing the threaded shank 25 to move the shim I8 against the type holder I5 and effect a locking of the type'holder in its centered position in the type holder socket I'I.
The operation of the device of this invention is simple. The operator or user of the stamping machine sets the desiredty'p'e in a type holder and thereafter inserts it by sliding into the holding socket provided on the underside of the vertically movable stamping head; The shim I8 interposed between the angularly shaped undercut the principles disclosed herein, and I therefore do "not propose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A type holder and socket therefor including a type holder having upwardly and outwardly extending tongue members and a sodketdncluding a head portion having a channel on the underside thereof having cooperative engaging groove portions for mating with the tongue members of the type holder, means interposed between the type holder and the socket for effecting a locking of the type holder in the channel, said means including a rigid, non-resilient shim adapted to lie within said channel along one side thereof, said head portion having spaced first and second open ings on the side thereof and extending into said channel, the first of said opening -being closely positioned one end of the channel and thesecond of, said openings being positioned midway between the ends of the channel, screw fastening means passing loosely through the first of said openings and attached to said shim and adapted to hold the shim in position somewhat loosely withrespect to said head portion, screw means thread- .edly engaging the second of said openings in said head portion and adapted to abut said shim centrally of its length and effect lateral movement of the shim, whereby the shim' is tightened against the type holder and thus locking the type holder with the socket head, said shim being tapered at its end portionad'jacent its attachment to said screw fastening means" at the first opening to permit easy slidingof the type holder within the socket, and said shim at its other end being provided with a laterally and inwardly bent end portion forming a centering abutment of the typ holder Within the type'holder socket.
