Application September 30, 1948, Serial No. 51,885
2 Claims. (Cl. 80-51) This invention relates to stripper guides for rolling mills, that is, guides which direct leading edges of strips emerging from a roll stand away from the lower work roll and ordinarily to the next stand, instead of permitting strips to follow the contour of this roll.
An object of the invention is to provide improved stripper guides which-accurately direct strips emerging from the rolls and yet are conveniently movable to an out-ofethe-way position to enable rolls to be inserted or removed from the roll housings.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved stripper guides which are latched releasably in an operative position for directing strips and on release of the latch mechanism gravitate freely to an out-of-the-way position.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure a preferred form of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, of a roll stand equipped with an improved stripper guide embodying features of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the roll stand and stripper guide taken substantially on line II-II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged isometric View of the latch mechanism; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View through the latch slideway and bar.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
In Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a roll stand which comprises roll housings ID, back-up rolls I2 and Work rolls I3. When the roll stand is assembled or dismantled, the rolls and their chocks are inserted or removed vertically through the upper ends of the housings. The roll stand may be equipped with the usual tensiometer I4 of any standard construction. Inasmuch as the foregoing parts are conventional, they are not shown nor described in greater detail.
The stripper guide of the present invention is supported on the two roll housings I on the exit side of the stand. This guide comprises a plate I5 xed to a shaft I6. The housings carry axially aligned bearings II a little below the pass-line of strip S, and these bearings rotatably support shaft I6. The plate has an operative position in which it is substantially horizontal or inclining slightly toward the rolls, as illustrated in full lines in Figure 2. When I refer to the operative position of the plate as substantially horizontal I intend this expression to include a slightly in- 2 clining position, such as shown in Figure 2. The plate also has an out-of-the-way position, in which it is substantially vertical, as illustrated in dot-dash lines in Figure 2. In the operative position one edge of the plate is close to the lower work roll and the plate guides the leading edges of strips S away from this roll, ordinarily to the next roll stand. In the out-of-the-way position the plate is clear of both the work rolls and the back-up rolls and does not interfere with their insertion or removal vertically. Shaft I6 is situated beyond the center line of plate I5, so that the section of the plate between the axis of pivoting and the rolls is heavier than the section beyond the axis of pivoting. Therefore the plate tends to gravitate to its out-of-the-way position.
One of the roll housings I0 supports latch mechanism for holding plate I5 in its operative position. Figure 3 shows this mechanism in detail. Preferably this mechanism is carried on a U-shaped mounting plate I8 welded to the inside of the housing. Plate I8 mounts a second plate I9, which in turn mounts a fixed stop 20 and a vertical slideway 2|. The latter carries a vertically movable latch bar 22, one side of which is spaced from stop 20 and the other side of which has a cam face 23. Shaft I6 carries a depending lug 24 which is receivable in the space between stop 2II and latch bar 22 for holding the plate in its operative position.
A spring 25 within the slideway normally urges the latch bar to its projected position (Figure 4). The outer face of the slideway has a vertical slot 26 and the latch bar carries a pin 21 which rides in this slot. The slideway carries a pvot ear 28. A bell crank 29 is pivoted to this ear and one of its arms has a slotted connection with pin 21. An operating handle 30 is joined to the other arm of the bell crank and extends to a position where it may be conveniently grasped by an operator (Figures 1 and 2).
In operation, whenever it is desired to move plate I5 of the stripper guide to its inoperative position, the operator moves handle 30 to the right as viewed in Figures 1 and 2. This movement rotates bell crank 29 counter-clockwise and retracts latch bar 22. When the latch bar is clear of lug 24, plate I5 gravitates to its out-ofthe-way position, in which it is clear of the rolls. The rolls may then be moved vertically into or from the roll housings without interference from the stripper guide. On release of the handle, spring 25 returns the latch bar to its projected position. When it is desired to return plate I5 to its operative position. the operator grasps the plate and rotates it clockwise until lug 24 reengages latch bar 22 and slides over cam face 23 into the space between the latch bar and stop 20.
From the foregoing description it is seen I have provided an improved stripper guide which is conveniently moved either to an operative position or to an out-of-the-way position. The mechanism is of simple construction and the device facilitates changing rolls over prior stripper guides with which I am familiar.
While I have shown and described only a single embodiment of the invention, it is apparent that modifications may arise. Therefore, I do not Wish to be limited to the disclosure set forth but only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A stripper guide for a rolling mill comprising a pair of spaced supports, a bearing on each of said supports, a at plate pivotally supported in said bearings for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a substantially horizontal operative position and a substantially vertical out-of-theway position, a retractable latch bar and a xed stop carried -by one of said supports, a lug depending from said Dlate and being receivable between said latch bar and said stop for holding said plate in its operative position, and means for retracting said latch bar, the section of said plate on one side of its axis of rotation being heavier than the section on the other side so that said plate automatically gravitates about this axis to its out-of-the-way position on retraction of said latch bar,
2. A stripper guide for a rolling mill comprising a pair of spaced supports, a bearing on each of said supports, a flat plate pivotally supported in said bearings for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a substantially horizontal operative position and a substantially vertical out-of-the- Way position, a slideway and a fixed stop carried by one of said supports, a retractable latch bar slidably mounted in said slideway and being spaced from said stop, a spring normally projecting said latch bar, a lug depending from said plate and being receivable between said latch bar and said stop for holding said plate in its operative position, and means for retracting said latch bar, the section of said plate on the side of its axis toward said xed stop being heavier than the section on the side toward said latch bar so that said plate automatically gravitates to its outof-the-way position on retraction of said latch bar.
