SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,146, dated August 1, 1882.

Application filed May 11, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS JEFFERSON STRIOKLAND, of Randolph, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The object of this invention is to provide shoes constructed in such a manner that they will allow more freedom of movement to the feet of the wearers, and will better support the said feet when bent into different positions, than shoes constructed in the ordinary manner.

The invention consists in a shoe made with the instep portion of the inner sole left free, the edge of the forward part of the inner sole sewed to and between the ontturned edge of the vamp and the edge of the outsole, the outturned edge of the rear part of the vamp and the forward part of the quarters sewed to the edge of the outsole, and the heel of the inner sole secured to the inturned ed gesof the counter and of the quarters and the heel of the outsole by pegs or nails, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the inner sole, the instep part and the heel of which are fitted to the last and shaved down in the ordinary manner. From the instep forward the edge of the sole A pro: jects, as shown in Fig. 5. The edge of the vamp B, from the instep forward, is turned outward, and is sewed to the edges of the two soles A 0. Along the instep the edges of the vamp B and quarters D are turned outward, and are sewed to the edge of the outer sole, 0, the instep part of the inner sole, A, being left (ModeL) free. At the corners of the heel the edge of the quarters is cut to turn inward around the heel, and is secured, in connection with the edge of the counterE, to and between the heels of the two soles A O by pegs or nails in the ordinary manner. The rear edges of the quartors are sewed together, and the seam thus formed is covered with a facing-strip, F, in the ordinary manner.

With this construction the sole of the shoe will be very flexible, and when the sole is bent themiddle part of the inner sole will rise and press against the hollow of the foot, so that the foot will be supported when bent, and thus kept from becoming weary.

\Vith this construction, also, the shoe will be less expensive in manufacture than when made in the ordinary manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shoe made, substantially as herein shown and described, with the instep part of the inner sole left free, the edge of the forward part of the inner sole sewed to and between the outturned edge of the vamp, and the edge of the outer sole and the heel of the inner sole secured to the inturned edge of the counter and quarters and the outsole by pegs or nails, as set forth.

2. The mode of making shoes, substantially as herein shown and described, which consists in sewing the projecting edge of the forward part of the inner sole to and between the outturned edge of the vamp and the edge of the outsole, leaving the instep part of the inner sole free, sewing the outturned edges of the rear part of the vamp and the forward part of the quarters to the edge of the outsole only, and securing the heel of the inner sole to the inturned edges of the counter and quarters and the heel of the outsole by pegs or nails, as set forth.
