Application April 1, 1952, Serial No. 279,852 3 Claims. (Cl. 206-57) This invention relates to waste baskets, and more particularly to an improved combination waste basket and waste bag dispenser.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved combination waste basket and bag dispenser of the type wherein the waste basket is provided with a bag or a lining receptacle in which the refuse is deposited, the bag or lining being removable when it becomes filled, and a new bag or lining being then positioned to receive additional refuse.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination waste basket and waste bag dispenser which is simple in construction, which is inexpen sive to manufacture, and which is arranged to contain a substantial quantity of waste bags in reserve.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination waste receptacle and waste bag dispenser which is neat in appearance, which is compact in size, and which is sturdy in construction.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved combination waste receptacle and bag dispenser constructed in accordance with the present invention, shown set up for use.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figures 1 through 4, 11 designates one form of improved ice waste basket constructed in accordance with the present invention, said waste basket comprising a sheet of relatively rigid foldable material, such as cardboard or the like, arranged and shaped to define the blank shown in Figure 3. The blank, designated at 12 comprises a body of cardboard including the central rectangular back or rear wall panel 13, the side wings or panels 14, 14 having the bottom tabs 15, 15, the top panel 16 having the side, hook- shaped tabs 17, 17, the bottom panel 18 formed with the parallel slits 19, 19 to receive the tabs 15, 15, and the front wall panel 20 having the side tabs 21, 21 shaped to be lockingly received in tongue- defining slits 22, 22 formed in the side panels 14, 14. As shown in Figure 3, the side panels 14, 14 are reduced in width at 23, 23 to define narrow side wall elements 24, 24 at the upper portions of the side panels, the side wall elements being formed with the parallel slots'25, 25 to lockingly receive the hooked tabs 17, 17 of the top panel 16, and the upper portion of the back panel 13 being formed with an attaching means or the horizontal parallel slots 26, 26 as well as being slit to define a retaining member, such as the U-shaped bail 27 at the intermediate portion of the back panel 13. The receptacle 11 is formed by folding the blank 12 on the dotted lines shown in Figure 3 to the configuration shown in Figure 1, the top panel 16 being secured in position by the locking engagement of the hooked tabs 17, 17 through the slits 25, 25, as shown in Figure l, the bottom panel 18 being secured by the engagement of the respective tabs 15, 15 through the slots 19, 19, said tabs being disposed in overlapping relationship, as shown in Figure 2, and by the engagement of the head portions 28, 28 of the side tabs 21, 21 in the narrow portions of the apertures defined by the slits 22 in side panels 14, 14 as is clearly shown in Figure 1. From Figure. 1 it will be thus apparent that a container is defined which has a rear housing portion including a top panel 16 and which has an open topped portion com municating with said rear housing portion.
Severally designated 29 are superimposed collapsible paper bags which are arranged in the rear housing portion of the receptacle, the upper part of one of the major walls of each bag being formed with a generally U-shaped slit 30, as shown in Figure 4, defining a fastening element depending tongue 31. The other major wall of each bag 29 is formed with parallel horizontal slits 32, 32 opposing and substantially at the same level as the tongue 31 of the bag.- In the rear housing portion of the receptacle, the bags are arranged with the tongues 31 thereof engaged through the parallel slits 32 of the next rearwardly adjacent bag 29 so that the bags are releasably fastened together, the rearmost bag having its tongue 31 engaged through the parallel slits 26, 26 of the rear panel 13 of the receptacle. The intermediate portions of the collapsed bags 29 are retained in the rear housing portion of the receptacle by being engaged through the U-shaped bail element 27, which is disposed around the intermediate portions of the collapsed bags, as shown in Figure 2, and exerts a compressive force thereon due to the resiliency of the cardboard material.
In using the device, the forwardmost bag is disengaged from the retaining member 27 and is expanded to fill the forward portion of the receptacle, as shown in Figure 2, so that refuse may be placed in the open bag 29, the top of the bag being exposed, as shown in Figure 1. When the bag has become filled, it is detached from the remaining bags and removed from the receptacle, the top of the filled bag being preferably closed by engaging its tongue. element 31 through its opposing parallel slits 32, 32. The bag may be locked in closed condition by bending the tongue element 31 upwardly, said tongue element being preferably provided with an embedded wire insert 33 arranged parallel to the marginal portions of the tongue element, as 'showninFigure 4 and serving'to reinforce said tongue element and to render said tongue element stiif enough to lock the bag in closed position. When the filled bag has been removed from the receptacle, the
next bag is-disengaged from the retaiinng element-27 and is opened to-the position shown 'in Figures 1' and 2.

collapsible bags, shown. at 49, are formed' at their upper portions wtih the' opposed horizontal slots 50 through which the tongue 45 is engageable,the bags'bein'g locked in-the'rear portion of the receptacle by the engagement of the head of tongue 45 through the T-shapedslot 46 in the manner shown in Figure 6. It will be understood that the tongue45 extendsthrough the slots 50of the collapsed bags in the rear housing portion of the receptacle and said bags are thussecured in the rear housing portionof the receptacle until a new bag is needed, at which time thehead'portion of the tongue 45 is disengaged from the T-shaped slot 46, allowing a new bag to be opened, the head of the tongue" being then reinserted through the slot 46to' loclo the bags inthe'rear housing portion'of the receptacle.
In the formof the inventionshown in Figures 7 and 8, the rear panel and side panels'of the rear housingportion of the receptacle'are formed with the parallel slits 511, 51 defining a retaining'm'ember in. the form of. a horizontal bail 52 which may be folded forwardly to the position shown in Figur'e ii to' act as means for. retaining a group of collapsed'pa'per bags in the rear'housing portion of the receptacle; In Figures 7 and 8', the rear panel ofv the receptacle i's designated at efl, and the side panels thereof aredesignated at-64, 64.

In the form of the invention shown in Figure the top panel of the rear housing portion of the receptacle,
shown-M 16, isformedwith the downstruck tongue 70 which maybe bent downwardly to engage the intermediate' portio'n of the top margin of the forwardmost bag in the receptacle to hold the forwardmost bag in the receptacle in open position, as well as to secure the collapsed bags in the rear housing portion of the receptacle. The formof the invention illustrated in Figure 10 performs the: same function as the previouslydescribed forms of the invention'except that it is not necessary to perforate the bags since the tongue element 70 serves as the retaining means-for holding the upper portions ofthebags relative to" the top panell fi' whereas the bail 27, shown in Figures 1 to" 4- maybe employedto secure theintermedia'te pop tions oftlie' collapsed bags in the rear'housing portion of the receptacle in the manner illustrated in Figure 2.
In the modification ofthe invention shown in Figure 11, the rear panel of the receptacle, designated at 73, is formed with slits 72, 72 defining reclining L-shaped tongues 71, 71 which may be bent forwardly to engage over the top margins of paper bags to retain said paper bags in the rear housing-portion of the receptacle similarly to'the arrangement of Figures 1 to 4, wherein it is again unnecessary to perforatethefbags since the depending portions of the tongues 71 serve as the retaining means to secure the top portions of' the bags in'th'e'rear housing portion of the receptacle;
While certain specific. embodiments of an improved combination waste receptacle and waste bag dispenser has been disclosed in'the' foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, itis intended thatno limitationsbe placed on the invention except. asdefined by the scope of the appended claims.
What isv claimed is:
1. In a bag dispenser, a container having a rear housing. portionzand. a forward portion communicating with said rear housingportion, said forward portion having an open top, attachingmeans, a plurality of collapsed paper bags in vertically. disposed relation positioned within said container with the innermost one of said bags resting against the rear housing portion, the rear side of each of said bags having a fastening element, thefastening element,-of. the-innermostbagbeing detachably connected toth e attachingmeansof said rear wall to secure the bags to said rear wall. and a. retaining member carried by said rear wall and extending, about the intermediate portions of the collapsed vertically disposedbags.
2. In combination, acontainer having a rear housing portion and an openforward portion communicating with said-rear housing. portion,.tl1e rear wall of said container being formedwith a horizontal slit, and a plurality of collapsed paper bagsslitto. define depending tongues at their. rear sides. and horizontal tongue-receiving slots at their forward sides,.thetongues of the respective bags being. engaged. inthe slots of adjacent bags to releasably secure the bags in adjacency, and the tongue of the rearmost bag. being engaged inthe horizontal slit of said rear wall to releasably secure the bags to said rear wall.
3. In a bag dispensenacontainer having a rear housing portion and a forward portion communicating with said rear housing portion, said forward portion having an open'top,-the rear wall ofsaid container being formed with an attaching means, and a plurality of collapsed paper bagsin vertically disposed relation-positioned with in said container with. the innermost: one of said bags resting against. the rear housing portion, the rear side of each of said bags having av fastening element, the fastening elementof: theinnermost bag being detachably connectedtothe attachingmeans-ofsaid rear wall to secure the bags'to said rear wall.
