WILLIAM F. WOODMAN AND JOHAN O. JOHANSEN, OF EASTON, PA.
COMBINED SOFA AND LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,123, dated April 1'7, 1883.
Application filed March 14, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM F. WOODMAN and J OHAN O. J OHANSEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined Sofa and Lounge, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to sofas of that class which can be readily converted into a lounge or bed, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this class that will possess superior advantages in point of facility of adjustment and general convenience.
1n the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our improved sofa, with one arm adjusted -in lowered position to form a lounge. Fig. 2 is a back view of the sofa in the same position. Fig.3 is a detail sectional view of the set mechanism of the arm, by which the end or arm of the sofa is adjusted. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the main body of the sofa, which may be constructed in any suitable manner, and is provided with a back piece, B, and the legs or supports 0, as shown.
D D are the arms or side pieces of the sofa, which may also be constructed in any suitable manner, and are hinged, as shown at E, to the edge F of the body of the sofa. By reason of being thus hinged to the body A the arms I) can be let don n from the latter, so that they will be on the same horizontal plane, or can be adjusted at any desired angle in relation to the said body. When secured up in their normal position, the under edge, G, of the arms I) D will abut neatly against the edge F of the body A, while the upper edges, H, of the arms at the back will come against the end edge, I, of the back piece, B. The arms are provided at their front sides, J, with an extension or flange, K, which projects over the face L of the body A when the arms are up in normal position, and serves as a safeguard against displacement of the arm or strain on its hinges.
(No model.)
Besides, the construction is such that the arms are securely braced in position against displacement by accident or otherwise.
We claim as our invention- 1. The combination, with the body of a sofa, of an arm-piece hinged at the end thereof, so that it can be adjusted in relation to the said body, and provided with the extension or flange K, arranged to project over the face of the body to obviate displacement of the arm-piece and prevent strain on the hinges, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the body of a sofa having the brackets carrying the set-screws, of an end arm-piece hinged to the edge of the body, and provided with a segmental pivoted arm that works through the said bracket to provide for the adjustment of the arm in relation to the body, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the body of the sofa having the back piece on which are arranged the brackets having the set-screws, of the end arm-pieces hinged to the edge of the body, and provided with the projecting flange or extension K and with the pivoted segmental arm that works through the said bracket, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. GOODMAN. J OHAN G. J OHANSEN.
