1 Claim. (Cl. 154-49) This invention relates to oor coverings, and more particularly to a oor covering which includes a top layer of fur.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a oor covering which consists of a laminated pad and which includes a top layer of fur, and a bottom pad or layer of flexible material.

It is contemplated that the backing layer for the oor covering may be of rubber or other llexible material or be of some composition, or may be of sponge rubber.

It is the further object of the present invention to provide a floor covering which includes a series of backing layers under a top layer of fur, with the various layers adhesively secured together.

It is the further object of the present invention to employ in said lloor covering a sheepskin fur.

It is the further object of the present invention to provide a novel under-surface for the backing of a oor covering to increase the frictional characteristics thereof, thereby preventing slippage.

It is the further object of the present invention to provide a novel floor covering which may be used in the rooms of houses and in other buildings, and may be used for oor coverings in vehicles and the like.

These and other objects will be seen from the following specication and claims in conjunction with the appended drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a plan view of the present oor covering with portions thereof broken away to indicate the backing layer.

Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a different type of backing material.

Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating a laminated type of backing.

Fig. 5 is a rear side view of the backing as viewed along lines 5-5 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevational section of a slightly di'erent form of oor covering, including an intermediate layer of sponge rubber.

It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claim hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawing, generally speaking, the tloor covering employs a top layer of fur, which in the preferred embodiment herein is sheepskin. In Fig. 1 there is shown a rectangular pad which may be a rug or similar article and which is generally designated at 11. Said oor covering 11 includes the top fur layer 12, and being animal fur, has a skin backing 13 from which the strands of animal hair project. There is provided a ilexible rubber backing 14 upon the rear surface of the skin 13 and adhesively secured thereto as at 15.

As shown in Fig. 5, the under-surface of backing 14 2,776,233 Patented Jan. l, 1957 is corrugated to thereby increase frictional contact with the supporting surface to prevent slippage of the rug or pad. The particular corrugation as contemplated in the present embodiment of the invention consists of a series of square uniformly spaced depressions 32 in the under-surface of backing 14, which are formed by the intersection of the ridges 30 and 31 formed in the under-surface of said backing.

There are provided a plurality of parallel spaced horizontally disposed elongated ridges 30. Additionally, there are arranged a second set of parallel spaced ridges 31 formed in the under-surface of backing 14, which are respectively arranged at right angles to ridges 30 to thereby define the series of uniformly spaced depressions 32.

In Fig. 3 there is shown a slight variation in the present floor covering which includes the sheepskin or fur layer 16 and thereunder its supporting skin 17. As a backing there is provided a layer of composition material 18, which is available on the market and may be constructed of jute or other composition of materials. The said backing 18 is adhesively secured to skin 17 throughout its contacting surface as at 19.

A slight variation of the present invention is shown in Fig. 4 wherein the sheepskin layer 20 and its backing skin 21 has adhesively secured thereunder as at 24 a composition layer 22, such as jute. There is provided a backing layer 23 of rubber which is adhesively secured throughout its inner surface to the adjacent surface of backing 22 as indicated at 24.

Another variation of the present oor covering is shown in Fig. 6 wherein the top fur layer 25 with backing skin 26, preferably constructed of sheepskin, is provided with an intermediate sponge rubber backing 27, adhesively secured thereto as at 29. There Iis provided an outer rubber backing layer 28, which is adhesively secured as at 29 to the adjacent surface portion of said sponge rubber to thereby complete the floor covering construction.

It is contemplated as a part of the invention that the backing element 18 may include fiber material or may include inorganic iibrous material such as glass fiber, or equivalent material.

It is contemplated as a part of the present invention that the particular fur employed, such as sheepskin, may be dyed to any desired color to thereby provide a very pleasing and attractive and extremely useful floor covermg.

While adhesives have been suggested as the preferred method of interconnecting the backing sheet to the fur skin or to an intermediate layer, it is contemplated as a part of the present invention that said layers may be otherwise secured together as by bonding or vulcanizing.

Having described myV invention, reference should now be had to the claim which follows for determining the scope thereof.

Iclaim:

A floor covering comprising a laminated pad formed of three layers, including a top layer of fur with a supporting skin, a bottom backing layer of rubber, and an intermediate layer of sponge rubber adhesively secured upon its opposite sides to said skin and backing.
