FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,886, dated April 17', 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. CARD, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fireplaces; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to fire places or grates having overhanging plates which serve to prevent the escape of unconsumed gases, and tend to eifect a proper distribution of heat; and consists in so constructing the plate that it may be extensible to suit different Widths of fire places, and adjustable in height or distance from the fire.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire place with my improved plate attached. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the extensible plate detached from the fire place.
A is the grate, B the brick work settin of the fire place and C the overhanging p late which may be curved as shown or otherwise. This plate is rendered capable of extension, and verticaladjustment by the following devices. It is composed of three sections 0 0 c". I claim as new and of my invention herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent The arrangement of the center plate 0, side plates 0 0, slots 6, pins f, supporting rods i), and pins hooks or staples a and cl, the whole being constructed and combined in the manner set forth to form a movable and adjustable deflecting plate adapted to be applied at any height to a fire place of any dimensions.
