Application February 7, 1955, Serial No. 486,482 2 Claims. (Cl'. 206-45.33)
Thisinvention relates to hosiery display devices, and in particular to wallet size packages adapted to clearly display all Vcritical features of the hosiery contained therein.
A principal object of the invention is to provide an improved stand-up display package for hosiery, of novel shape and size adapted for convenience'in packing, handling, display and automatic merchandising.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a package permitting the welt, seam and sheer leg portions of womens hosiery to be readily and simultaneously viewed through a transparent outer wrapper, effecting a display ofroutstandingsales appeal. p j
Another object is to provide in a hosiery display package a-unique hosiery and sheet carrier unit, including means to maintain the unit Aarrangement'and retain the stockings in place therein, proof against inadvertent displacement. 'f
Other objects are to provide an .attractive and inexpensive display device'in which hosiery may be readily packaged with minimum labor expense, and in which the hosiery may be effectively sealed and protected until purchased and used. Further objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention and the novel features thereof may best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a preferred embodiment of the invention,containing a pair of womens hose;
Figure 2 is a sectional View, on enlarged scale, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on enlarged scale, taken on a line 3 3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of a further embodiment of the invention, containing a pair of mens half hose or socks;
Figure S is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figures 6 to 9 are a series of views showing sequentially the manner of folding and assembling the hosierysheet carrier unit of the device, and,
Figure l0 is an exploded view of a complete device corresponding to that of Figure 1, illustrating the assembly relationship of the parts thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the preferred embodiment illustrated in Figures l, 2, 3 and 10 includes a rectangular open top box or receptacle 20, Which may be constructed of cardboard or the like. The receptacle is relatively narrow and thin, and may be for example four inches wide and ten inches long, and three-eighths inch in depth. In the receptacle is positioned a hosierysheet carrier unit 21, comprising a pair of womens stockings 22, a sheet carrier 23, and suitable fastening means such as the illustrated piece of transparent, pressure-sensitive tape 24, which engages the welt ends of the stockings to the sheet carrier and maintains the unit relationship. An inside label overlies the upper end of the unit 21, and the open top of the receptacle 20 is covered by a lCe transparent wrapper 26, which preferably encloses the entire device.
As best illustrated in Figures 6 to 9, the sheet carrier 23 corresponds substantially in length to the interior of receptacle 20, but is approximately twice as wide, corresponding in width approximately to the width of the welt ends of the stockings 22. The sheet 23 is longitudinally Vcreased at 27 intermediate its sides 28, to facilitate folding along the crease line. To assemble the unit 21, a sheet23 may be placed over the welt ends of a pair of stockings 22; the stockings being laid out flat as illustrated in Figure 6, with the upper edge 29 of the sheet in substantial coincidence with the upper edges 30 of the stockings. Y
. Thereafter, the lower portions of the stockings may be folded up and over the lower edge 31 of the sheet, as illustrated in Figure 7, and then refolded so as to lie entirely within the confines of the sheet, as illustrated in Figure 8.' The sheet 23 may then be folded along its crease 27 inwardly to enclose the lower portions of the stockings between its sections, and the upper end of the assembly may be fixed in position in some convenient manner, as by means of the tape 24. Preferably, the tapel 25 may be placed over the upper end of the unit before placement in the receptacle. As shown in Figures 3 and l0, the inside label 24 may be constructed of paper or light cardboard, folded to comprise a front panel 32, end panel 33 and a short back panel 34. As will be clear, when the label is positioned over the upper end of the unit in the manner illustrated, the end and back panels thereof serve effectively to retain the label front panel 32 in place.
If the stockings Z2 are seamless, it is relatively unimportant which side of the unit 21 is uppermost in the receptacle 20. In either case, the welt and sheer leg portions of the stockings will be clearly visible through the open top of the receptacle, permitting a customer to see at a glance the critical features thereof. Additionally, the color and shade of the hose are apparent, particularly if the sheet carrier 23 is white or light color, for contrast. If the stockings have seams, as a further feature of the invention, the unit 21 may be placed in the receptacle 20 with the seamed sides of the stockings uppermost, that is with the stocking seams overlying the upper section of the sheet 23. In such case, the welt portions, sheer leg portions and seams of the stockings are all presented upwardly to the open top of the receptacle, whereby all three features may be readily and simultaneously viewed. Moreover, these features are displayed in a relatively narrow package, a consequence of the longitudinal folding of the welt ends of the stockings.
With the unit 21 positioned in the receptacle 20 as described, and also an inside label 25 if such as desired, the open top of the receptacle may be covered by a transparent wrapper 26, or the receptacle may be entirely enclosed by the transparent wrapper. An outside label may be printed on or applied to that portion of the wrapper overlying the open top of the receptacle, and the overlying wrapper portion may also be provided, if desired, with a decorative border. The underside of the receptacle maylin similar manner be provided with advertising materia When the device has been completely assembled, the
tape 24 servesv to eiectively retain the upper portions` of the stockings adjacent the upper edge of the sheet carrier, so that the displayed stocking portions may not shp downwardly Within the package. The resultant device has un..
usual sales appeal, in that it presents for ready inspection all critical features of the hose contained therein, and also provides effective protection for the hose and convenient form for packing and handling.
Another embodiment of the invention, suitable for the packaging and display of mens half hose or socks, is il1ustrated in Figures 4 and 5. In this modification, a sheet carrier 23v of single thickness may be utilized, that is the sheet carrier may conform roughlyto the dimensions of the receptacle 20, The sheet carrier preferably is provided with an oblique lower edge 35, and the upper portionsl of the socks 36 are disposed above the sheet 23 in the manner illustrated, with the heel portions 37! thereof aligned with the lower'rcorner of the sheet. The oblique lower edge 35of the sheet accordingly permits the toe portions V38 ofthe socks to be folded under the sheet in general alignment with the upper portions thereof. As in the case of the embodiment previously described, suitable fasteningmeans such as a small piece offtape 24 may be employed to detachably engage the upper edges of the socks to the sheet 23', adjacent the upper edge thereof. As will be evident, in this embodiment also the device is adapted to display through the transparent Wrapper all critical features of the hose contained therein.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention a structure in which the various objects hereinbefore set forth, together with many practical advantages, are successfully achieved. As various possible ernbodiments may be made of the mechanical features of the above invention, all without departing from the scope thereof, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:
