This invention relates to an air feeding attachment for a combustion chamber for oil burner installations.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved air feeding attachment for a combustion chamber for the purpose set forth in which a thorough mixing of oil spray and air is eifected.
A second important object of the invention is to provide such an attachment with a novel construction of such character that the mixing of oil spray and air is joined to the production of a violent movement of the mixture in the combustion chamber.
A third important object of this invention is to provide a novel combustion chamber attachment of this class in which provision is made for controlling the proportions of oil spray and air entering the chamber.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be presently apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel arrangement of parts and construction of elements hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the appended drawings and particularly claimed.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a section of the invention extending longitndinally along its axis and disclosing its relation to a fire box;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1, an enlarged fragmentary; and
Figure 3 is a perspective of a portion of the invention showing the arrangement of certain rings and vanes used for directing air into the chamber.
As shown in Figure 1, this invention is mounted on the front sheet of a fire box, an opening 11 of circular form being provided therein.
Extending from the sheet 10 in spaced relation to the opening 11, is a series of arcuately spaced support bars 12. These bars enter and support the cylindrical portion 13 of a housing, indicated in general at 14, in spaced relation to the plate 10, thereby providing an annular space 15 for the entry of air. This housing is continued forwardly in a frusto-conical portion 16, and terminates in a fiat forward end closure 17, having a central aperture for the entry of an oil supply pipe 18. On the end within the housing, the oil pipe is provided with a spray nozzle 19.
On the cylindrical portion 13 of the housing, there is slidably mounted a sleeve which may be moved toward and from the plate 10, by handles 21, and thus control the area of the air opening for space 15.
Fitted in and extending forwardly from the opening "ice 11, is a cylindrical tube 22 which is provided with internal stiflening bars 23. On the forward end of the tube 22, is fixed an annular disk 24 and on the forward face of this disk there is fixedly mounted a series of diagonally disposed vanes or bafiles 25, providing air spaces 26, widest at the outer edge of the disk and narrow at its inner edge. Forward of the disk 24 is a forwardly spaced series of disks 27. These disks are held in spaced relation by vanes 28 and provide air spaces 29 in the same manner as do the vanes previously described, vanes 25 and air spaces 26. The outer edges of all the disks are spaced equally inward of the housing walls and the disks decrease in size to follow the contour of the housing. This disk and vane assembly forms what may be termed the most important feature of the invention and it is to be particularly noted that the air entering this assembly is directed, by the inclination of the vanes, in a multiplicity of jets around a central open core of spray entering from the spray nozzle, mixes therewith, and effects a violent swirling of the mixture which lasts as the mixture burns. Thus the flame entering the fire box is distributed uniformly over the fire box walls.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as indicated by the appended claim.
What I claim is:
An attachment to a fire-box having a fiat wall provided with a circular opening, said attachment including in combination a series of supporting bars spaced equally from the opening and uniformly spaced equally apart, said bars being fixed to and projecting perpendicularly from said fiat-face, a housing having a cylindrical portion surrounding said bars and having an open end provided with an edge spaced uniformly from said fiat face and providing an annular air entry, a cylindrical member slidably mounted on the housing and movable into and out of contact with said fiat plate, a cylindrical member fitted in said circular opening and extending into said housing, brace bars fixed in spaced parallel relation to the inner face of said cylindrical member, a flange extending outwardly from the free edge portion of said cylindrical member, a series of annular plates extending in parallel spaced relation, and supporting means fixed between each adjacent pair of annular plates and consisting of circumferentially spaced vanes with the spacing between the vanes being wider at their outer ends than at their inner ends.-
