Kehr, Abington, Pa., assignor t6 Kebr Products Company, Philadelphia, Pa. a corp qration of Pennsylvania My invention relates to a bag, and more particularly relates to a paper or paper-like bag for enclosing an article and also having a separate pouch for including a gift.
The usual bag which is used to package articles is made on high speed bag making equipment. In the sale of articles such as chocolate pops, ice crearn sandw'iches, candy, peanuts, and the like, for children, it'hasibeen the custom in recent years to enclose a small gift for the children. However, although it has been found that these gifts promote the sale of the. article itself, contact of these gifts directly With the article Within the bag is vety frequently impractieal for sanitary or other deteriorating action on the article. k
'It thetefore, is anobject of my inVention to provide a bag having a separate pouch for including a gift wherein the gift does not corne into contact With the article enclosed With the bag.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bag having a separate pouch thcrein for including a gift such as the usual baseball card having statistical information and pictures thereon.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bag having an'objcct therein, wherein the bag itself rnay have decorative features imprinted thereon without interfering With the pouch for the gift.
Another object of my inveution is tQ provide a bag having a pouch therein for includinga gift wherein the bag is disposable and the contents cf the bag as well as the contents of the pouch are easily obtained.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bag having a pouch therein wherein the bag may be manufactured on high speed bag machinery and whereby the insertion of the gifts in the bag may be accurately and properly positioned at high speed.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly effective in operation.
With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details cf construction and combination f parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction With the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a bag having integral pouch means therein embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along lines 22 cf Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along lines 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the sheets cf the bag prior to assembly and showing fold lines thereon along which the sheets are folded in the bag making operation.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modification of my invention and showing fold lines thereon wherein a single sheet of paper is utilized for fabricating the bag and pouch.
Referring now in greater detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, I show a bag, generally designated as A, having pouch means thereon generally designated as B, the pouch means en-v closing a gift therein, generally designated as C.
lt is to be noted that my bag can be fabricated frorn any type paper, including MF, MG, super calendered, treated and coated papers madev cf si1lphite or sulphate pulp, or a combination cf pulps, of cellophane, polyethylene, aluminum feil, transparent acetate, and othertype transparent films, including Pliofilm.
The bagA comprises a front sheet 12, a pair cf back flaps 14 and 16, and an internal web 18, the latter of which is sealed along its peripheral edges to the peripheral edges of the front sheet 12 to define therebetween the pouch means B. The back flaps 14 and 16 are sealed along their respective edges at 20 in overlapping relationship With each other to form a single rear surface 22.
The pouch means comprises the space between the front side 12 and the internal web 18, the two being sealed along their lateral edges 24 and the lip edge 26. The lower edges cf the front side 12, the internal web 18 and the rear surface 22 are unitarily folded b-ackward to define flaps 28, 30 and 32 respectively, and sealed to an adjacent flap surface, the flap 28 being sealed to the lower portion of the rear surface 22. The space be-v tween the web 18 and the back surface 22 is utilized to contain the article such as a chocolate pop, candy, peanuts or the like. bag itself is completed.
The gift C comprises the usual baseball card or similar prize and is enclosed within the pouch means B prior to the sealing cf the lip edge 26.
As is easily seen in Fig. 4, the steps of manufacturing the bag A is as follows:
The internal web 18 is sealed along its lateral edges at 24 to the front side 12, and the lower flap 30 is sealed t0 the lower flap 32. The back flap 14 is then folded back along fold lines XX' and the back flap 16 is folded back along lines YY' whereupon the two flaps 14, 16 are sealed along the seam 20 at their overlapping ends. The sealed lower flaps 30 and 32 are then folded back along lines ZZ and in this respect it is to be noted that a small portion of the lower edge of flaps 14 and 16 are included within the lower combined flaps 30, 32. These combined lower flaps are then sealed With a suitable cement to the back of the surface 22. The card C is then inserted between the lip edges of the front side 12 and the internal web 18, whereupon the lip edges 26 are sealed With a suitable cement or paste to form the complete bag.
In Fig. 5, I show a template for my modification A1, whereby the entire bag and pouch are formed from a single sheet or web of material having an internal web 40, a front portion 42, and a rear portion 44. The steps 0f manufacturing the bag A1 are as follows:
The internal web 40 is folded back along lines T--T whereby edge 46 coincides With fold lines VV'. Using a suitable cernent 01 paste, the internal web 40 is sealed along edge 46 to the front portion 42 within the area designated by the broken line 48. The rear portion 44 is folded along lines VV' and its edge 50 is sealed adjacent fold line TT' within the area defined by the broken line 52. The lower portions of each cf the front side 42, internal web 40 and rear side 44 are folded along lines W--W and the respective flaps 54, 56, 58 are sealed to their adjacent flap, the combined flaps 54, 56, and 58 being sealed to the external side of the rear portion 44. The gift or card is then inserted within the mouth cf the space defined between the internal web 40 'Patented Dec. 15, 1959 The latter article being enclosed after the and front side 42 whereupon 1:he mouth is sealed along the area definedby the broken line; 60.
While I have described my invention as being a bag, it is also to be observed that the construction shown is applicable to a pouch of the type with heat sea1ed -sides ahd bottom, as we'Il as to a wrap, envelojae, and/er p'acke't. It is also to be bbserved that the matgrial utilized 'for forming the aforesaid may bg= pag'aer, cellophana, polyeithylene, vinylacetate or any dther transparent or opaque sheet like material.
Although my invention has been de cribed in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustra'tive rather than -limiting, since the invention rnay be variously embodied, and the sc'ope of the invention is to b'e determined as claimed.
I claim as my invention:

A package comprising a. bag having a pou'ch and a r'emdvable article within said pouch, said bag comprising a si1bstantially flat back -me'niber integral With a substantially flat freut member, said back rnember having an arcuate upper edge extending arcuately above tbe upper edge of said front member, said upper edge of the froht mernber being substantially straight and extending from t'he opposite ends of said arcuate edge 011 said back member, said pouch comprising an immer substan tially flat Web forming the back all thereof, and the front Wall Cf the pouch being formed by said freut mernber of the bag, the lower and side edges of the front and back Walls of said pouch being sealed together, the1ower edges of said.pouch together with the lower edge of said back mernber being overlapped against and sealed to the lower unter surface of said back member, and said pou :h bav ia'g ai1 upper end spaced from and unattached to said being defined by the sealed-together upper edges of said.

2. The package of claim 1 wherein said back member cf the bag comprises a pair of oppositely arranged flaps, one of said flaps being integrally hinged to one side edge cf said front member and tbe other of said flaps being integrally hinged to the 0Iaposite side edge cf said front member, said flaps being =hingedly folded back behind said front mernber into a position wherein corresponding free edge's of said 'fla'ps are sealed 'together in over-' lapped relationship.
3. The package of claim 1 wherein said back member of the bag is -a -she'et cf ge'nerally rectan'gulrconfig'uration having an arcuate upper edge, said sheet being hing edly and integrallj (ztr'txected a1or'rg one edge with the corresponding edge of said freut member, the opposite edge of said front member being hingedly and integrally connected with the corresponding edge of said inner web.
