Buttery, Kalamazoo, Mich., assiguor, by
mesne assignments, to KVP Sutherland Paper Company, a corporation of Delaware Filed Oct. 2, 1957, Ser. No. 687,646 7 Claims. (Cl. 225-48) This invention relates to cartons.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a dispensing carton which is well adapted for dispensing large rolls of stock.
Second, to provide a dispensing carton which may be made in a tubular collapsed form, partially erected and the rolls of stock introduced endwise and the end walls closed all by machine operation.
Third, to provide a dispensing carton having these advantages having a cutter blade which is covered and protected when the carton is closed.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a dispensing carton embodying my invention with a portion of the cover and cover flap broken away to show structural details.
FIG. 2 is a front perspective view with the cover flap released from its retaining means and the cover partially open and with its flap positioned in initial tucking position.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating some of the steps in assembling the roll of paper with the carton.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 55 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton is formed with the cutter attached.
FIG. 7 is a plan view of a collapsed carton formed of the blank of FIG. 6, the parts being broken away to show structural details.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated the carton is formed of an integral blank of paperboard stock with the addition thereto of the cutter and adhesive as will be described.
The carton comprises a bottom 1, front wall 2, rear wall 3, cover 4 and cover flap 5 all disposed in alignment in the blank and hingedly connected by hinging scores 6.
The bottom is provided with end wall members 7 hingedly connected thereto at 8. The front wall is provided with end members 9 hingedly connected thereto at 10. These end wall members are desirably of the cross sectional dimensions of the carton.
The rear wall is provided'with end wall members 11 hingedly connected thereto at 12 while the cover flap 5 is provided with end members 13 connected thereto by the perforated severing lines 14. Notches 15 are formed in the outer edges of the cover flap 5 in alignment with the severing lines 14. These notches facilitating the severing for the purposes hereinafter pointed out and also provide beveled end edges 16 for the cover flap facilitating its use as a tucking flap.
The cutter 17 is secured to the top edge of the front wall 2 as by means of integral brads 18 indicated conventionally in the drawing.
The first step or stage in forming the carton from the blank is to apply adhesive to the outer sides of the front wall desirably in restricted areas as at 19 and to the end wall members 9 as indicated at 20. The front wall has provements in dispensing longitudinal slits 21 above the restricted glue spots 19. The front wall is then folded inwardly upon the bottom although it is obvious this folding may be done before applying the adhesive. The cover is then folded upon the rear wall with the cover flap overlapping the front Wall and is adhesively secured thereto by the adhesive 19 and the cover flap end members 16 are adhesively secured to the end wall members 9 by adhesive 20.
The collapsed carton thus formed may be adjusted to upright position as shown in FIG. 4 by pressure applied to the opposed edges of the collapsed carton.
The roll of paper 22 to be dispensed is inserted endwise into the erected carton and the end members closed. It will be understood that the term paper as here used comprehends various kinds of paper and also various films of wrapping material, metal foil and the like.
In the embodimentillustrated the end members 9 with the end members 13 attached thereto are swung to erected position, the members 11 lapped thereon and the members 7 are swung into overlapping position to the members 11 and 13 and secured thereto as by adhesive indicated in FIG. 5.
The cover 4, in the embodiment illustrated, is somewhat longer than the bottom, front and rear walls and the cover flap so that when the cover is closed its ends supportedly overlap the end walls and is supported thereby. When the carton is erected the cutter is covered and protected by the cover and its closure flap. This prevents the cutter being damaged or handlers being injured by the cutter in the handling of the loaded carton.
To open the carton the adhesive connection between the cover flap and the front wall is broken and this may be done by pulling upwardly and outwardly on the cover flap and this same movement severs the cover flap from its end members 13 which are secured to and become end wall members.
The cover flap may be used as a tucking flap to hold the sheet dispensed as it is pulled downwardly over the cutter. The slits 21 above the spots of adhesive prevent disfiguring peeling or stripping of the surface of the front wall as the cover flap is torn therefrom. If desired slits 23 may be formed in the cover flap above the adhesive area for the same purpose of restricting stripping but such stripping as might occur on the inner side of the cover flap is not as objectionable as that which might occur on the front wall if these slits were not present.
While my invention is desirable for use in dispensing cartons for all sizes of rolls to be dispensed, it is particularly desirable for dispensing relatively large rolls of stock.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in theart to embody or adapt my inve on as may be desired.
