Be it known that I, Jarras H. BLEssING, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Check and Stop Valves, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention consists in combining in one device a puppet check-valve and astraightway screw stop-valve; and the object of my improvements is to provide a simple, effective, and inexpensive appliance as a substitute for the separate check-valve and screw stopvalve now commonly used in the feed-pipes for steam-boilers. This object I attain by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of a valve containing my improvements; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the removable valveseat for the check-valve, and Fig. 1i a side elevation of the same.
As represented in the drawings, A is thevalve-casing, having a globular valve-chamber, a, an inclined valve-chamber, a', induction-opening a2, and eduction-opening c. A partition, B, like those commonly made in globe-valves, is formed in the chamber a, and is provided with a circular opening, b, and an annular tongue, b', that is concentric to said opening.
C is a removable valve-seat,having an opening, c, that corresponds to the opening b in the valve-casing, and an annular groove, c',
that is adapted to t over the annular tongue b of said casing. An elastic packing, c2, is fitted into the annular groove c', for the purpose of forming a tight joint with the tongue b. Openings c3, formed in the cylindrical portion of the removable valveseat C, afford an egress for the escape of any liquids that pass through the device. The removable valvescat C and its mode of attachment to the partition B of the valve-casing constitutes a separate and independent invention, for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 272,634 were granted to me on the 20th day of February, 1883.
D is the check-valve of the device, made in a puppet form, and adapted to `close over the opening c in the removable valve-seat C; or
'when the latter is omitted, (as it may be when preferrech) said valve can be arranged to close over the openingb in the partition B, after the manner of the ordinary checkvalve. f
Eis a cap for closing the opening in the upper side of the valve-chamber a, as shown in the drawings. Said cap is adapted to bear upon the upper end of the removable valveseat C, so as to secure the latter in place, as fully explained in my former Letters Patent hereinabove referred to.
F is an inclined partition formed across the eduction-opening ai* of the valve-casing. Said partition is arranged at right angles to the center line of the inclined valve-chamber a', adjacent to the check-valve D, and forms a valve-seat for the stop-valve G, for which purpose it is provided with a circular opening, f, that is centrally located under the valvechamber a, as shown in Fig. l.
G is the stop-valve of the device. It is attached by means of a revoluble joint to the lower end of the screwstem g, which, at its outer end, is provided with a hand-wheel, g, or other suitable appliance for operating the said stem.
H is the bonnet for the inclined valvechamber a. Said bonnet is provided on its outer end with the usual stuffing-box, 7i, for producing a tight joint around the stem g, and with an internal]y-screw-threaded portion, h, that serves as a nut for said screwstem.
By arranging the partition F in an inclined position and placing it in close proximity to the check-valve D, the discharge of the liquid follows a direct line after it passesthrough the cheek-valve, and by this means only a single point of deflection from a straight line occurs while the liquid is passing through the device.
