DISPENSING PAPER HOLDERS Filed Sept. 10, 1959 14 mvENToR mm EUUENIELOUISFMMMUHMFMW 18 M 'mZZZf United States Patent O 3,026,009 DISPENSING PAPER HOLDERS Jean Eugene Louis Emmanuel Memain, 8 Villa Jacqueline, Chatillon-sous-Bagneux, France Filed Sept. 10, 1959, Ser. No. 839,114 Claims priority, application France Nov. 14, 1958 1 Claim. (Cl. 225-52) This invention relates to a dispensing paper holder incorporating a cutting edge, and is more particularly but not exclusively intended for the use of technical staff in drawing otlices for holding a roll of paper; it can be attached to the top of a drawing board or to a wall, or simply placed on a suitable table.
A dispensing paper holder in accordance with the invention is formed with a special cutting edge, namely a cutting edge which has a concave surface, which is slightly raised from contact with any other part of the holder in order not to be dulled or blunted by such contact, and which is rounded on its underside to diminish the friction on the paper while this is being unrolled.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention the holder comprises two metal sections obtained by bending a sheet of metal whereof the one forms the cover for the other, the larger of these sections, i.e. the cover, being trough-shaped and one of its legs being longer than the other and bent rectangularly outwards and bevelled along its edge to form the aforesaid cutting edge.
The other section, intended to be attached to any suitable surface, has the form of an angle bar with unequal legs the shorter whereof is situated inside and against the straight leg of the cover in such a manner that its longer leg extends parallel to and beyond the cutting edge of the bent leg of the cover, the whole being assembled by means of nuts and bolts provided on the angle bar.
The leg of the angle bar extending under the cutting edge carries a strip of, for example, sponge rubber against which the rounded underside of the cutting edge rests to prevent the paper slipping while being cut.
Further, the cover has a cut-out portion in the middle as well as two apertures at the ends made adjacently to the cutting edge by reason of which, after a roll of paper has been placed in the holder, the paper can be unrolled and drawn off or dispensed by hand.
The cover which can be used separately as a trimming rule has reference or viewing holes made in its leg forming the cutting edge and parallel thereto.
Insertion of a roll of paper in such a holder is most suitably effected from one end if local arrangements permit; otherwise, the roll is merely placed in the holder after removing the cover; in either case it is essential that the free end of the paper shall lie tangentially on the long leg of the lower angle bar to be able to pass freely between this and the bevelled edge of the cover against which the paper can be cut to the length required.
During cutting, the upper side of the cover controls the slope of the paper drawn out which it guides at a suitable angle for cutting and which it prevents from rubbing against the concave top bevel of the cutting edge.
The invention will be better understood from the following description aided by the accompanying drawing which shows an exemplary and non-exclusive form or embodiment.
FIGS. 1 and 2 represent respectively front and back perspective views of this embodiment;
FIG. 3 is a cross-section thereof on a larger scale;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary large-scale section showing the cutting edge; and
FIG. 5 shows the cover in use separately as a cutting or trimming rule.
As illustrated the dispensing paper holder comprises two component sections 1 and 2 bent up from sheet metal and fitting into each other. The component or cover 1 is trough-shaped with one leg 3 longer than the other leg 4, and bent rectangularly outwards to form by means of a bevel 5 on its outer edge a cutting element; the other component 2 has the form of an angle bar with unequal legs 6, 7 whereof the shorter leg 6 is placed inside and against the leg 4 of the cover 1 in such a manner that the longer leg 7 extends parallel to and under the leg 3 of the cover and beyond the cutting edge 5 which it there-by protects.
The component 2 is equipped with a number of bolts 8 with milled nuts 9 fitted perpendicularly to its short leg 6 by which the cover 1 is attached having for this purpose holes 10; further the component 2 has openings 11 for its attachment to a drawing board or to any wall or partition.
The cover 1 has a cut-out portion 12 in the middle, as well as two further apertures 13 made adjacently to the cutting edge 5 and respectively enabling the rolling and unrolling of the paper P placed in the holder.
As shown clearly in FIG. 4 the top bevel 5 of the cutting edge of the cover 1 is made slightly concave to improve the cutting of the paper P. Moreover the edge 14 formed by this concave bevel is located slightly above the leg 7 of the base 2 in such a manner as not to touch the latter, and its underside 15 is rounded to reduce the friction on the paper being withdrawn.
During cutting, the upper side 16 (FIG. 3) of the cover 1 suitably controls the slope of the paper holding it at a fixed cutting angle a and preventing it from rubbing against the bevel 5.
A strip of sponge rubber 17 is fitted between the rounded back 15 of the cutting edge 14 and the leg 7 of the angle section 2 to which leg it is cemented for the purpose of holding the paper P against the aforesaid rounded back 15 to prevent it from inopportunely slipping while being cut.
The roll of paper P is introduced into the described holder, either laterally from one end or after removing the cover 1. In both cases, in order to ensure economical dispensing of the paper and enable it to be cut, it is essential that the outer, free end of the rolled paper shall lie tangentially to the roll on the leg 7 of the angle section, passing freely between it and the cutting edge 5 (see FIG. 3).
When removed the cover 1 can be used as a cutting or trimming rule (FIG. 5). For this purpose holes 18 are made adjacently to the cutting edge 14 and parallel thereto to register when placed upon a drawing, with the outline or frame thereof and thus enable trimming the edges equally around such frame or outline.
It will be understood that the invention is not restricted to the form or embodiment herein described and represented but can on the contrary embrace all variants of form, material or dimensions.
I claim:
A dispensing paper holder comprising a pair of component sections, one of said sections forming a cover having a trou -shaped configuration with one side leg thereof being longer than the other leg thereof, said other leg having a fiat portion bent laterally at right angles thereto and bevelled with its edge providing a paper-cutting element, the other of said component sections having the form of an angle bar with one leg thereof being shorter than the other leg thereof and positioned with the shorter leg extending in parallel relation to the longer leg of said cover section and the longer leg of said other component section extending across said cover section and beyond the lateral-1y bent portion of said cover section other leg providing an outlet therebetween for paper beneath said cutting element, means detachably connecting the shorter leg of said other component section to said longer leg of said cover and said fiat portion edge having a convex surface on the side thereof facing said other component section longer leg and a concave surface on its opposite side with said convex and concave surfaces meeting in a sharp cutting edge.
