FENCE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,507, dated October 23, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHANIEL M. STRAT- TON, of the city, county, and State of New York have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Iron Fence or Railing; and I do hereby declare that the followin is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a back or inside View of my railing after construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections of the picket and rail, showing the hook A, A fastened to the picket B, B by being cast with it or otherwise, fitting into the notch of the rail C, C, as shown by the dotted lines, and clasping the flat surface of the same by its angular end. The shank of the hook where it meets the rail being round, acts as a pivot admitting of the raising or lowering of the end of the rail to suit the Varieties of grade.

The rails are fastened to posts in the ordinary manner.

I do not claim broadly a construction of fence which allows of ascending and descending grades without inclining the pickets and without requiring a modification of the construction for each change of grade, for this has before been accomplished, but in a manner differing from my construction and requiring a greater number of parts. Neither do I claim hooking the pickets upon the lateral rails when the hooks are not received in notches so as to prevent their moving laterally thereon for I am aware that such has been before proposed, but

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The construction of fence herein described, consisting of the rails O C and pickets 'B B united by means of hooks A A on the one part and corresponding notches or slots in the other part, the hooks and recesses being adapted to fit together so that the partsare kept in their proper positions without any additional means and so as to cause the pickets to stand erect when the line of the fence is inclined, all substantially P as herein set forth.
