UNITED STATES JAMES ALEXANDER MOINTOSH,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF \VARR EN, PENNSYLVANIA.
TALLYING ATTACHMENT FOR MEASURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,786, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed March 24, 1884. (Ne model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs ALEXANDER MOINTOSH, of Farren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Tallying Attachment for Measures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide for vessels employed to measure liquids and other commodities a tallying attachment for recording the number of times the measure is emptied.
The invention consists of a Sliding handle by which the measure may be lifted and an index moving in front of a dial and carried by pawl-and-ratcl1et mechanisms operated by the sliding handle.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a measure with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line a- 00 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on liney y in Fig. 2.
The measure A is of the usual well-known form, and in guides B 13, attached to the back of the measure, is placed a bar, 0, capable of sliding in the said guides and carrying a handle, D, of sufficient width between its points of attachment to the bar 0 to admit of the sliding of the bar 0 in the guides B B through a sufficient distance to operate the tallying mechanism. A spiral spring, E, is connected with the lower end of the bar 0, and is attached to the measure A, near the bottom thereof.
Attached to or formed upon the guides B B is a dial, F, in the center of which is journaled an arbor, G, having upon the outer end an index, H, and upon the inner end a ratchet wheel, I. The graduations on the dial F eorrespond in number with the teeth on the ratchet-wheel I. The spring-pawl J, connected by an arm, K, with the lower end of the bar G,
passes upward through a guide, L, and engages the ratchetwheel I. A spring-detent, M, attached to the back of the dial F, engages the ratchet-wheel I and prevents it from retrograde motion. The dial F is inclined for ward from the plane of the bar 0, and is braced by an arm, N, projecting rearwardly from the dial and attached to the side of the measure. \Vhen the measure is filled, the user grasps the handle D and first raises the hen die to the full limit of its upward movement, thereby turning the ratchet-wheel I through the engagement of the spring-pawl J, connect ed with the bar C. This moves the index II forward one space of the dial F and indicates one filling ofthe measure. \Vhen the measure is emptied and set down, the retraction of the spiral spring E returns the bar 0 and handle D and spring pawl J to their original position, while the spring detent M prevents the ratchet-wheel I from turning backward.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a measure provided with a sliding handle carrying a pawl with a ratchet-wheel in the path of the pawl, a detent for said ratchet-wheel, and a suitable index connected to the ratchet-wheel, whereby whenever the cup is lifted when filled the pawl will cause the ratchet -wheel to revolve one tooth and be there held by the detent, sub stantial] y as set forth.
2. The combination of the sliding handle 0 and its pawl J with the dial -plate F, formed with loops B B, lug L, and brace arm N, whereby the dial-plate is braced and guides for the handle and its pawl are formed, sub stantially as set forth.
The combination, with the measure A, provided with guides B B, of a bar, 0, and handle D, attached thereto, spiral spring E, pawl-J, ratchet-wheel I, detent M, index H, and dial F, as specified.
