(Cl. 2-102) This invention relates to the art of wearing apparel and more particularly comprises such an article provided with a detachable back extension constituting a tail portion which may be tucked into the trousers of the wearer over the latters hips.
Men who work out of doors during cold seasons are accustomed to wearing short jackets. Some are approximately waist length so as not to interfere with leg movement in the course of their activities. Vests are often worn under such jackets to provide additional warmth and relatively light weight apparel. The activities of such workers often require upward stretching movements of the arms or bending over movements which cause the jacket to ride upwardly of the wearers back leaving a portion of his back exposed between the lower edge of the jacket and the wearers trousers. This may often be a source of discomfort on account of the fact that an active worker may freely perspire and under such condition during the course of his activities he may have a portion of his back exposed for the reason above indicated.
It is therefore a principal object of this invention to provide a vest or similar article of wearing apparel having a detachable back extension which will provide extra covering for the wearers back continuously during the course of activities of such a wearer similar to those above described.
It may be desirable under some conditions to wear such an article of wearing apparel without the back extension, and it is, therefore, a further object of the invention to provide means for readily attaching and detaching the back extension.
Still another object of the invention is to provide such an article of wearing apparel with a back extension which gill readily conform to the curvature of the wearers ips.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide an article of wearing apparel designed to cover the upper portion of a wearers body from approximately the neck to the waist, said article including an integral back portion, a back extension securable to said back portion at the waist edge thereof to extend downwardly therefrom, and means for detachably securing said extension to said back portion in the relation described. Preferably my Wearing apparel article comprises a sleeveless vest and has front portions which are separable from one another along a vertical line from top to bottom, means being provided for detachably securing the free edges of said front portions to one another. Such latter means may comprise slide fastener instrumentalities and likewise the means for securing the said extension to the back portion may also comprise separate slide fastener instrumentalities.
Preferably the said back extension extends downwardly from the waist edge of the back portion sufficiently to cover the rear portions of the wearers hips and thighs when Worn and I form the back extension in such a manner as to conform to the curvature of the wearers hips.
For a detailed description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of an article of wearing apparel embodying my invention and showing the back extension in secured relation to the back portion thereof.
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevational view of the same.

FIGURE 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of FIGURE 1.
Now referring to the drawing and describing the invention in detail, the letter A generally designates an article of wearing apparel which may be in the form of a sleeveless vest, as illustrated, designed to cover the upper portion of the wearers body from approximately the neck to the waist. The letter B generally denotes the detachable back extension of my invention.
The vest A may be made of any suitable material but preferably is of a quilted construction comprising sewn together layers of material 16, 17 between which is interposed suitable weather insulating material such as down or wool 18, the outer layers or facings 16, 17 of the quilted construction being of softer non-wool material.
The vest A comprises an integral back portion indicated by the numeral 1 and separable front portions 2 and 3 which are separable from one another along avertical line from top to bottom approximately centrally of the front of the vest. Means provided for detachably securing the free edges of said front portions 2 and 3 to one another and such means may comprise conventional slide fastener instrumentalities generally indicated by the numeral 4. In FIGURES l and 3 the slide fastener closure instrumentalities 4 are shown in a condition securing the free edges of the front portions 2 and 3 to one another.
Suitable pockets such as indicated at 5, 6, and 7 may be provided in the front portions 2 and 3 of the vest A.
The back extension B is securable to the back portion 1 at the waist edge thereof. Means are provided for detachably securing the back extension B to the back portion 1 of the vest A and such means may comprise the slide fastener instrumentalities generally designated by the numeral 8, the same including the slide fastener strip 9 secured to the waist edge of the back portion 1 and carrying the slider element 10 and also including the slide fastener strip 11 secured to the upper edge of the back extension B. The slide fastener instrumentalities 8 are of conventional construction and it will be readily understood that the slider element 10 is cooperable with the slide fastener instrumentalities 9 and 11 to fasten the back extension B to the back portion 1 in the manner illustrated in FIGURES l, 2 and 4.
It is to be noted that the upper portions of the back extension B at each side thereof are made in such fashion as to provide concavo-convex areas as indicated by the numerals 12 and 13 so as to enable these portions to conform with the curvature of the wearers hips. For this purpose triangular portions may be cut out of the material of the back extension B, said triangular portions flaring outwardly to the edges of the material and the margins of the cutouts being sewn together along the seams indicated by numerals 14 and 15.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the back extension B may be quickly attached to the back portion of the vest A when desired and under such condition the wearer may tuck the back extension inside of his trousers in a manner to provide additional protection for the rear portions of the hips and thighs and prevent the back portion of the vest from riding up the wearers back so that the provision of the back extension thus prevents exposure of the wearers back which would otherwise occur under such conditions.
I claim:
1. An article of apparel of the class described, comprising a multi-layer jacket-type cold weather garment, said article being designed to cover the upper portion of the wearers body from approximately the neck to the waist, said article including anintegral back portion, a back extension securable to said back portion at the waist edge thereof to extend downwardly therefrom, said back extension being of a Width approximating that of said back portion to cover only the rear and side portions of the wearers hips and thighs, s'aid backexte'nsion'having a triangular portion cut out of the material and-flaring outwardly to the edge of the'material adjacent each extremity of the waistedge of said back extension, the'margins of each said cutout being sewn together whereby said back extension is shaped to conform to the curvature of the wearers hips and adapted to be received inside the seat section of the wearers trousers, and means for detachably securing said extension to said back portion with that extension extending downwardly from the waist edge of said back portion.
2. An article of apparel of the class described, comprising a multi-layer cold weather vest designed to cover the upper portion of the wearers body from approximately the neck to the waist, said vest having an integral back portion and having front portions separable from one another along a vertical line from top to bottom, means for detachably securing the free edges of said front portions to one another, a back extension securable to said back portion at the waist edge thereof to extend downwardly therefrom, said back extension being of a width approximating that of said back portion to cover only the rear and side portions of the wearers hips and thighs, said back extension having a triangular portion cut out of the material and flaring outwardly to the edge of the material adjacent each extremity of the waist edge of said back extension, the margins of each said cutout being sewn together whereby said back extension is shaped to conform to the curvature of the wearers hips and adapted to be received inside the seat section of the wearers trousers, and means for'detachably securing said extension to said back portion with that extension extending downwardly from the Waist edge of said back portion.
3. An article as in claim 1 wherein said means comprises slide fastener instrumentalities.

Claims (1)

1. AN ARTICLE OF APPAREL OF THE CLASS DESCRIBED, COMPRISING A MULTI-LAYER JACKET-TYPE COLD WEATHER GARMENT, SAID ARTICLE BEING DESIGNED TO COVER THE UPPER PORTION OF THE WEARER''S BODY FROM APPROXIMATELY THE NECK TO THE WAIST, SAID ARTICLE INCLUDING AN INTEGRAL BACK PORTION, A BACK EXTENSION SECURABLE TO SAID BACK PORTION AT THE WAIST EDGE THEREOF TO EXTEND DOWNWARDLY THEREFROM, SAID BACK EXTENSION BEING OF A WIDTH APPROXIMATING THAT OF SAID BACK PORTION TO COVER ONLY THE REAR AND SIDE PORTIONS OF THE WEARER''S HIPS AND THIGHS, SAID BACK EXTENSION HAVING A TRIANGULAR PORTION CUT OUT OF THE MATERIAL AND FLARING OUTWARDLY TO THE EDGE OF THE MATERIAL ADJACENT EACH EXTREMITY OF THE WAIST EDGE OF SAID BACK EXTENSION, THE MARGINS OF EACH SAID CUTOUT BEING SEWN TOGETHER WHEREBY SAID BACK EXTENSION IS SHAPED TO CONFORM TO THE CURVATURE OF THE WEARER''S HIPS AND ADAPTED TO BE RECEIVED INSIDE THE SEAT SECTION OF THE WEARER''S TROUSERS, AND MEANS FOR DETACHABLY SECURING SAID EXTENSION TO SAID BACK PORTION WITH THAT EXTENSION EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY FROM THE WAIST EDGE OF SAID BACK PORTION.
