JESSE H. TALBOTT, OF NEVADA, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO LEWIS 'SOHOOLER, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
SCHOOL-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,928, dated February 10, 1885.
Application filed February 15, 1883.
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn H. TALBOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Nevada, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School- Desks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the manner of constructing and operating the top of a schoolof inclosing, covering, and protectingaslate, copy-book, paper, pens, &c., when they are not in use, and also for the purpose of supporting a slate, paper, or book at various degrees of inclination whenever desired.
Heretofore in a writing-desk attachment for chairs a cover has been connected with a desk in such a manner as to leave the cover free at both edges. so that it could be moved backward and forward and retained at various degrees of inclination relative to the flat top of the desk. Ratchets have also been fixed to desks and tables to support hinged covers or sections thereof at various anglesjfor various purposes.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of a cover having duplex hinges attached to its under side, with a frame or stand having a fixed section of cover on its rear'side, and fixed racks on the end pieces of the frame, as hereinafter fully set forth, in such a manner that the adjustable cover can be readily"1aid fiat to abut against the edge of the fixed section of the top or cover, as required, to conceal and protect the slate, &c., and also in such a manner that the adjustable section of the cover can be retained stationary at any degree of inclination desired without any extraneous device, for the purpose of promoting the convenience of a person when writing or reading at the desk.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows the receptacle for a slate, paper, pens, &c., uncovered. Fig. 2 shows the adjustable cover and duplex hinges detached from the desk. Fig. 3 shows the adjustable cover combined with the desk and adjusted as required (No model.)'
to support an open book in a suitable position to accommodate a reader seated at the desk.
. Jointly considered, these figures clearly illustrate the construction and operation of my I complete invention.
A is the hinged adjustable cover, and A the fixed portion ofthe cover. A iS-the front portion of the wall of the book-receptacle.
E is the bottom of the book and slate receptacle fixed to the legs or corner-posts F.
G represents a pencil and pen tray formed in or attached to the fixed bottom E.
N N represent duplex hinges fixed to the top side of the fixed bottom E and 'to the under side of the adjustable cover A.
13B are pieces fixed to the ends of the hinged cover A, to overlap and conceal racks when the cover is closed.
'1 'I represent racks formed in or attached to the top edges of the end pieces of the book and slate receptacle.
When the adjustable cover is in position as shown in Fig. 3, and I wish to lay it flat, as required to close the desk and to cover the articles resting upon the fixed bottom of the box, I simply lift it sufficiently to raise its lower edge from the racks '1, and then let it move forward until its rear edge will drop down and abut against the edge of the fixed top section, A A reverse movement will open the desk and bring the lower edge of the moving cover A in position to engage the racks T, as required to retain the adjustable cover in an inclined position, and adapted to support a book in a convenient position for the use of a person seated at the desk.
I am awarethat covers have been connected with a desk by means of links pivoted to their ends and to the outside of the desk in such a manner that the cover could be reversed; but my manner of connecting a cover-section-with a desk by means of duplex hinges that will be folded and concealed under the cover when it is closed against a fixed section of cover, and
angles relative to the fixed cover-section when the trout edge of the hinged section engages fixed racks that extend at right angles thereto, is novel and greatly advantageous.
that will support the hinged section at various I claim as my invention-- the top of a desk having a fixed section of 1. In a school-desk, the combination of a cover, A ,atits rear side, avertically-projectcover, A, having duplex hinges attached to its under side, with a frame or stand having a 5 fixed section of cover, A on its rear side and fixed racks on the front portions of the end pieces of the frame, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
' 2. The cover A, having end pieces, 13, pro- -to jecting downward, and duplex hinges N, at-
tached on its under side, in combination with ing front, A and racks T on the ends, substantially as shown and described, to operate T5 in the manner stated.
In testimony'whereof I affix'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
