I To all whmn it may concern.-

Be it known that we, SOLOMON J. RHOADS and MORTON G. RHOADS, both citizens of the United States, residing at Metropolis, in the county of Massac and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to devices for handling, transporting, and assisting invalids; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, whereby an invalid may be raised with ease and gently removed from the bed and transported from one place to another and replaced in bed without jarring, at the same time affording the patient a reclining position, an upright position, as well as a horizontal position when the person is on the device, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained. and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate ourinvention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of our invalid-supporter. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a platform or base, the

'under side of which is provided with casterwheels a, upon which the device is transported from place to place. Upon and arising from this platform are two standards, I) I), connected at the bottom by a cross bar, a, and near their top bya crossbar, d, between which standards is a vertical space, a, in which plays a vertical post, f, that is provided with a rack-bar, g, which engages by its teeth a pinion, h, on a shaft, 2', journaled in hearings on the standards. Said shaft is provided with a handlever, i, for turning the pinion, for a purpose hereinafter explained. Near the upper end of the ratchet-post aforesaid the same is transversely perforated to receive one end of avshaft,

j, having a crank-handle, it, while the opposite end of said shaft has its bearing in a support, Z, which is supported upon a bar, m, secured to and projecting from the rack'bar or post f, above mentioned. Hinged to each side of this bar in is a long arm, n, and a short arm, 0, the latter having a foot-rest, p, and to these arms n and 0, as well as the bar m, are removably applied curved fingers 1", which are longitudinally slotted, as at s, to receive a T- headed screw, 2, by means of which said fin gers are adj ustably applied to the arms aforesaid.

To the end of the shaft j is secured a pulley, u, having a ratchet, o, to engage the pawl w on the post Z. Secured to this pulley is a cord, a, that is wound in opposite directions, the end I) of which passes over a pulley or roller, 0, in the end of an arm, d, secured to the bar at, and the end of said cord is secured to the arm or foot-rest portion of the device, while the opposite cord is secured by its end to the opposite arm, and this arm is provided with a hand-lever, e, and a jointed arm-rest, f, as shown in the drawings.

The operation of this device is as follows: The supporter is moved uponits caster-wheels to the side of the bed and the fingers are slid beneath thepatient, after which the pinion engaging the rack-bar on the sliding post is revolved, thereby raising the hinged arms,

with the fingers, as well as the patient thereon, sufficiently high to clear the bed, after which the device can be moved from place to place with ease, and carrying therewith the patient; and when it is desired to replace the invalid in bed the device is moved close to the side thereof, the arms, with their fingers, lowered until the person is upon the bed, when said fingers ar'e withdrawn'from beneath the pa tient, thus leaving the latter on the bed. hen the person is on the fingers and desires an inclined or an upright position, the crank-handle is turned, thus winding upon the pulley at, raising the arm a, at the same time the cord 7) is unwinding from said pulley, and allows the arm, with its foot-rest, to be lowered.

It will be seen from the above description and by reference to the annexed drawings that an invalid can be gently raised out of bed, carried about the room, either in a horizontal, reclining, or an upright position, and gently replaced in bed without the slightest shock; and to prevent any noise from the casteravheels the periphery of the latter may be supplied with rubber tires, and at the same time it is durable andcheap to manufacture.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In an invalidsupporter, the combination of the platform A, mounted on caster-wheels 5 and provided with standards I) b, the bar m, having standard Z and hinged arms a and 0, the said bar m and wings a and 0 being" provided with adjustable fingers. the crank-shaft j, pulley u, cords a b, and pawl and ratchet 10 c, all operating substantially as described.
