SHELF FOR STOVES.
No. 313,940. Patented Mar. 17, 1885.

THOMAS KEHOE, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
SHELF FOR STOVES.
.IJPBCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,940, dated March 17, 1885.
. Application tiled July 26, 1884.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS KEHOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shelves for Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings,
My invention relatffs to a shelf for stoves; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached or detached, to provide improved means for the support of the shelfwhen raised or lowered,
and to provide supporting brackets or uprights so arranged that the shelf may be placed upon stoves of different widths.
proved construction and combinations of parts lVith these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with suitable uprights or stands, of a pivoted shelf and a brace or stop for holding the same in a raised or low' ered position.
The invention further consists in the imhereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved shelf, the same being shown lowcred for the reception of articles. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the shelf raised or thrown back out of the way. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the supporting uprights or standards.
In the accompanying drawings,in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the ordinary cooking-stove of the usual construction.
13 represents the uprights or standards, which are preferably cast. Integral with these up rights or standards, at their lower ends, are brackets O, the lower leaf or section of each bracket being provided with a screw-threaded opening. These brackets are fitted upon the edge of the stove, near the rear end thereof, and the screw-threaded openings are adapted to receive set-screws, which bear at their upper ends against the under side of the stove, and thus hold the uprights or standards firmly and securely against any movement whatever. The upper ends of the uprights or standards are provided with holes or openings.
D represents the shelf, which is rectangular in form, but having a recess, 6, upon its rear (No model.)
side to allow of the passage of the stovepipe d. The shelf is provided on its under side with rods E, one of which is located at the forward end of the shelt',while the other is located at the rear end thereof. The rear rod of the shelf passes through the holes or openings in the uprights or standards, thus pivotally securing the shelf thereto.
Upon the forward of the rods E is pivoted at each end of the same a brace or stop, F, each of which is provided on its outer side, near its lower end, with an outwardly-extending lug, G, having a cross piece or head at its outer end.
The standards or uprights are each provided with a slot, H, which is slightly curved, as shown, and each of said slots is provided at its upper and lower end with an enlarged opening, f. The lugs of the braces or stops work in these slots, from which it will be seen that when the shelf is in the position shown in Fig. l the braces will be at the lower end of the slots, and that the lugs will rest in the enlarged opening. To raise the shelf up out of the way,it is only necessary to push or disengage the lugs from the openings at the ends of the shelves, when the shelf maybe raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, and will be held in such position by the lugs engaging the enlarged opening at the upper end of the slot.
It will be seen that should a stove be nar rower than the shelf the uprights or standards may be slid upon the rods E with the braces K to the desired width or adjustment, and then clamped or held in place by the brackets, which, as before described, engage the projecting ledge of the top of the stove.
From the above description it will be seen that my improvement is simple in its construction, may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, and that it affords convenient means for the support of various utensils while cooking, keeping the same warm.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the shelf, of laterally-movable supporting-standards and laterally-movable stops or braces, whereby said shelf may be attached to stoves of different sizes, substantially as set forth.
2.'The combination, with the shelf, of laterally movable uprights having attachingbrackets at their lower ends pivoted thereto, and laterally-movable stops or braces pivoted to the shelf at the forward end thereof, and connected with the uprights in such manner that theymay slide thereon and lock the shelf in either a vertical or horizontal position with regard to the stove, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the shelf having the recess b, of the uprights pivoted thereto in such manner that they may be moved laterally, said uprights having attachingbrackets at their lower ends, and braces pivoted to the forward end of the shelf in such manner as to be laterally movable thereon, and connected with the uprights so as to slide thereon and look the shelf in either a vertical or horizontal position with regard to the stove, as set forth.
4. In a stove-shelf, the combination, with uprights or standards having clamping-brackcts at their lower ends, of a shelf hinged or pivoted at its rear end directly above the stove, and adapted to be folded to occupy a position at right angles thereto, and stops or braces for supporting the outer or free end of the shelf when raised, substantially as set forth.
5. In a stove-shelf, the combination, with uprights or standards, of a shelf pivoted at its rear end between said uprights directly above the stove, and braces pivoted to the shelf at-their upper ends, their lower ends sliding upon the vertical uprights, substan tially as set forth.
6. The combinatiomwith uprights or standards having brackets at their lower ends, the lower leaf of each bracket having a screwthreaded opening and set-screws to engage the same, of a shelf pivoted to said uprights directly above the stove, and braces for supporting said shelf, substantially as set forth.
7. The combinatiomwith uprights or standards, of a shelf located directly above the stove, said shelf having a rod, E, passing through openings in the upper ends of the uprights or standards, and pivoted braces for supporting the shelf, said shelf being adapted to be raised or folded at right angles to the stove, as set forth.
8. The combinatiomwith uprights or standards having openings at their upper ends, of a shelf located directly above the stove and having a rod near its rear end, and braces for supporting said shelf, said braces working in slots upon the uprights or standards, substan- 11. The combinatiomwith uprights or standards, of a pivoted shelf located directly above the stove, and braces pivoted to said shelf, said braces having lugs at their lower ends adapted to work in slotsformed on the uprights or standards, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination, with uprights or standards, of a shelf having rods secured to its under sid'e, braces mounted on the forward of said rods, said braces being each provided with a lug on its outer side adapted to work in slots on the uprights or standards and engage an enlarged opening at either end of said slots, substantially as set forth.
13. The combinatiomwith uprights or standards having brackets at their lower ends and set-screws working in said brackets, said uprights having each a vertical slot having an enlarged opening at each end, of a shelf having rods secured to its under side, braces pivoted to the forward of said rods, said braces being each provided with a lug upon its outer side near its lower end, said lug having a head or cross piece, substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of 'two witnesses.
