HEEL-PLATE FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,014, dated May 5, 1885.

Application filed March 2, 1885.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWARD QUIGGLE, of Dedham, in the county of Norfolk, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have-invented a new and useful Improvement in Heel-Plates for Boots or Shoes; and I do hereby declare the same to be'described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 an edge elevation, and Fig. 3 a perspective view, of a heel-plate of my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.

The said figures show on an enlarged scale the said heel-plate and its spurs or clinches.

The heel-plate is to answer as abottom finish to a shoe or boot heel of leather or other material; and it consists of a metallic plate, a, of proper form, and a series of pairs of metallic spurs or c1inches,bb',projecting from its upper face, and integral or formed or cast in one piece with the plate, and having those of each pair beveled on their inner facesfrom at or near the middles thereof to the points, such being in order for the clinches of each pair, when being driven into a heel, to be spread apart or turned away from each other, and thereby secure the plate to the heel to great advantage. When the heelis of a thickness to allow the spurs to go entirely through and extend beyond it, they will or may be clinched upon it before fixing it to the sole, or they may be driven into the sole, so as to spread in it and aid in connecting the heel thereto.

When heel-plates are fastened to heels by means of nicked-headed screws going through the plates and screwed into the heels, the

loosen the hold of the plates to the heels, all of which is obviated or prevented with my improved manufacture of heel-plates whose fastenings do not extend through it, but from one side only of it.

The heel-plate I construct with an opening, (1, through it atits central part, such opening being in the form of astar. This opening answers to prevent the heel from slipping on ice while a person may be walking thereon, and, besides,is useful for allowing to be seen through it an imprint or label on or applied to the bottom of the heel. Generally speaking, I have two pairs of the clinches or spurs at or near proved kind to a heel, the latter is to have holes made in it for the reception of the pairs of clinches or spurs, each of such holes having a depth about half the length of the pair of clinches or spurs to enter it. This having been accomplished, the pairs of spurs or clinches are to be introduced into the holes, and the plate, by means of a hammer or mallet or a press, is to beforced up to the bottom of the heel.

I claim- As an improved manufacture, a heel-plate perforated or having in it an opening, d, as described, and provided with a series of pairs of spurs or clinches integral with it and projecting from one face of it, and having those of each pair beveled on their inner faces from their points toward their middle, all being substantially as set forth.
