LABEL-HOLDER FOR FREIGHT-CARS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. CUSHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Racks for Freight Oars; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a labeling or carding rack adapted for use upon freight-cars. The rack being constructed with two compartments, each of which is provided with a cover, it is particularly adapted for use in connection with my improved method or system of carding railway freight-cars in order to facilitate and insure the proper shipment and direct return of the car to the shipping-point, for which system or method application for Letters Patent in the United States was filed in the United States Patent Office January 2, 1884, Serial No. 116,204.

The invention consists in the construction and also in the combination of parts hereinafter particularly described, and then specified in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved double label or cardingrack. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the cover of one of the compartments and spring for closing the same.

The label-holder A is preferably made of malleable iron and at one casting. It is provided with two compartments, B and 0, one of which is preferably larger than the other. Each of the compartments is provided with a cover, 1), adapted to be closed by means of a spring, 0, applied in any ordinary manner which may suggest itself to the mechanic. The front of each compartment is provided with an opening that willpermit of the inspection of the cards contained in the rack, while at the lower edge of each of the compartments an open space, a, is formed to facilitate the removal of the cards from the compartment. 1f considered desirable, in con structingthe rack the open space in front of each of the compartments may each be divided into a series of openings by means of crossbars, which are indicated by the dotted lines (I d in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The covers I) b of the compartments are adjusted so as to slope outward, and thus prevent water from entering the interior of the compartments. The upper compartment of the rack (which, when used in connection with my system of carding freight-cars, is intended for the reception of a series of cards indicating the ter minal points of the route, with instructions relative to the return of the car, &c.,) is of suitable size to accommodate a large number of cards, while the lower compartment of the rack, which is intended to receive a billingcard only, is smaller and may be only of suf ficient depth to permit a single card only to be inserted.

The rack may be readily attached to the side of a car by means of screws passed through holes prepared to receive them in the margin of the plate composing the back of the rack, which margin is extended beyond the sides of the compartments.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

l. The combination, with a car, ofa labelholder or rack having two compartments, one above the other, each compartment opening at the top, and provided with a cover and with a spring for closing the same, substantially as shown.

2. A label-holder for freight-cars, having two compartments, one above the other, each compartment opening at the top, and provided with a hinged cover, an open space in front, and an opening at its lower edge to facilitate in the removal of cards from the rack, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
