.iPEClFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,344, dated June 16,1885.
Application filed May 3l, i894.
To LZ wiz/om, it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, Jol-1N G. FUYA'r, of Taunton, in the State of Massachusetts, and TOUSSAINT FUYAT, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improve ment in Machines for Producing Yarn of Different Colors, of which the following` is a specification.
VOur invention has for its object the manufacture of thread or yarn of lengthwise alternating colors from previously-manutactnred roving of different uniform colors, and it consists in the improved combination of intermittentlydriven rollsY and continuousiydriven rolls, and means for driving the said rolls, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a front view of a portion of the rolls of a spinning-frame embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is an end view of the rolls showing the gears by means of which they are operated, one of the gears being broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the rolls. Fig. 4 is an elevation and partial section ofthe rear rolls. Fig. 5 is a detail drawing, partly in section, showing an improved geared roll adapted for alternate movement. Fig. 6 represents a length of the yarn or thread of alternating different colors.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of the frame of the spinning-machine, which const-itutesabearing for the rolls, the forward set of rolls, BB, being made for drawing and delivering the roving as usual in such machines. The rear set of rolls, C C C C/, are specially constructed for carrying out our improvement, and are preferably made hollow and placed upon a central shaft, the alternate rolls C being secured to the shafts D and D by means of the set-screws a e or otherwise, while the intermediate rolls, C C', C shown in section in Fig. 4) are arranged to revolve loosely upon the shaft. The fixed rolls C and the loose rolls C are arranged in an alternating series upon the shaft D opposite to that of the alternating seriesof the same rolls upon the shaft D', so that throughout the series a roll C fastened to the shaft D will be arranged opposite to a loose roll upon the opposit-e shaft, D, and the loose rolls upon one shaft may be made to revolve by simple frictional contact with the periphery of the tight (No model.)
roll upon the opposite shaft; or the two rolls may be provided with interlocking gear-teeth, by means of which motion will be imparted from the tight roll upon one shaft to the loose roll upon the opposite shaft. In Figs. l and 3 the opposite rolls C C are represented as being provided with a fluted surface, and in the detail view, Fig. 5, the adjoining rolls C Cl are represented as being provided with a narrow gear, c, the gear c upon the tight roll of one series being adapted to gear into the gear c of the loose roll of the opposite series.
In order to provide for the separation of the rovings g g/ in entering the rolls, the adjoining rolls C C upon the shaft D are provided at their edges with annular grooves (Z, while tlrc corresiionding rolls upon the opposite shaft, D, are provided with the raised flanges c, which are adapted to enter the grooves d of the opposite rolls.
A modification of the rolls C C is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5, the surface of the rolls being thus made conical and provided with gear-teeth, which are of proper depth and pitch on the outer side of the rolls, as in the gears c, but which are made to vanish at a point near the groove d or the flange.
rThe shafts D and D and the tixed rolls C thereon are driven by means of the segmental So gear E, secured tothe shaft K ofthe lower delivering-roll, B, the teeth being removed from alternate quarter sections ofthe circumference of the gear, leaving the two opposite segmental gears, fj', the lower shaft, DQ ofthe combining-rolls C C being driven from the segmental gear E by means of the intermediate gear, F, which engages with the gear G ofthe shaft D', and the upper shaft, D, of the combining-rolls C C is driven from the segmental gear E by means of the intermediate gear, H, and the gear I, which engages with the gear J, secured to the shaft D, the gears G and J being arranged in different vertical planes so that they will not engage with each other.
D and D will thus be separately driven from the segmental gear E, and the gears F and H are so arranged relatively to each other that the shafts D and D will be alternately at rest and in motion during the continuous revolution of the rolls B B', and when the spinningmachine is set in operation the roving will be The shafts IOO delivered to the spinning devices from the continuously-driven rolls B B; but the rear rolls, by means of their alternately stopping and starting action, will cause the differentlycolored rovin gs g and r/ to be alternately fed to the rolls B B and pulled asunder between the rolls B B and the rolls GG', and by becoming united in the contracted passage through the guide h, which may be supported in position by means of a stem, z', they will pass as a single roving, g2, of alternating colors b'etwecn the'rolls B B to be thereafter twisted or spun into a single thread of alternating colors.
It will of course be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the segment-gear for imparting an alternate intermittent motion to the shafts of the combining-rolls, as other devices may be advantageously employed for this purpose;v and that other means may be employed for causing the alternate feeding and separation of the differently-colored rovings.
We claim as our inventionl. The combination of two adjoining pairs of combining-rolls, and means for driving the same with an alternating intermittent or variable movement, with a pair of delivering-rolls and means for driving the same continuously, whereby the rovings of different colors will be alternately drawn forward or pulled asunder, and joined into a single roving of alternating colors, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a shaft and a pair of rolls arranged adjoining each other upon the same, the one fast and the other loose, with a shaft having an oppositely-arranged pair of fast and loose rolls thereon, whereby upon the stoppage or varied movement of either one of the roll-shafts the loose roll thereon willv be driven from the opposite shaft, and means for driving the said shafts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the roll-shafts with the oppositely-arranged series of combiningrolls arranged in pairs, the one fast and the other loose on their respective shafts, a segmental driving-gear, means for driving the same, and means for communicating a forward rotary movement to the said roll-shafts alternately from the segmental driving-gear, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the roll-shafts and the opposite combining-rolls, the one fast and the other loose on their respective shafts, the one being also provided at its edge with a raised flange and the other with a corresponding groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of two adjoining pairs of combining-rolls, and means for imparting an alternate intermittent or variable move` ment to the same, with a pair of drawing and delivering rolls, and means for driving the same continuously, and a roving-guide arranged in the space between the combining and delivering rolls, whereby the rovings drawn asunder bythe alternate stoppage of the combining-rolls will be uniformly brought together to form a single roving, substantially as described.
